KDE under HPUX

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has successfully compiled KDE under HPUX or has a copy of the compiled binaries/depot. I have already installed and worked with the Ximian Gnome under HPUX. On a side note, the Ximian release seems to be lagging behind Gnome in the linux world. Does anyone maintain a more up to date Gnome for HPUX?

Re: KDE under HPUX

you are right. We *need* kde on HP-UX.
It's better than cde or vue and it's better than the M$ Desktops.
Found information on http://www.kde.org/faq/en/kdefaq.html .
Introduction part 2.3 lists HP-UX as a system where KDE is runnig on.
Hope we can get a hp-supported version soon.

Been there, done that got the tee-shirt.

Take a look at these two threads I posted a while back...

Maybe this helps to.

Note that I gave decent points.

Re: KDE under HPUX

I have already gotten Gnome 1.4 working on my desktop. I found the install very easy as long as you read HP's faq first. I have read your responses but nothing seems newer than the version on HP's site. Under Linux Gnome has had many more improvements that are not included with the lagging 1.4 release. I am looking for a source of gnome that is more up to date. The porting site does have a good number of Gnome addons, but most of the stuff appears to be several years old.

The KDE link I have seen before, but it is very outdated coming from 1999, and it is for 10.20. Since then KDE has underwent a significant code overhaul. I would be happy to compile a current version if someone has some good instructions on how to successfully do it under HPUX. A depot would be even better.

Re: KDE under HPUX

While we're on this topic --

Anyone knows what the direction of CDE is? Is the alliance DEAD -- since Sun is going Gnome, IBM is KDE?

What's HP's direction in future GUI releases? Stay with CDE or make it a choice for the user for KDE or Gnome.

I am for KDE btw...

Jeff, hope you were able to find all the KDE resources you need... Use Google search...

Re: KDE under HPUX

CDE is not dead, and wont be for some time. Gnome may not be the wave of the future, as Novell just bought out Ximian.

Nice to want to get ahead, but for now stay with CDE. Even if Sun chooses Gnome, and HP chooses KDE the change will be 2-3 years out.

In non-production (AKA Hacking and Plinking), go with what's comfortable and fun!

Re: KDE under HPUX

CDE will remain the supported desktop on HP-UX for the foreseeable future. The GNOME desktop is available as an unsupported option. There are no plans to support either GNOME or KDE as a supported component of HP-UX.
Necessary questions: Why? What? How? When?

Re: KDE under HPUX

You Guys noticed? Starting with the JUN2003 Release of HPUX 11i, Gnome, mySQL and Mozilla (yess!) are now included in the base install?

The version though of Gnome that is bundled is not Gnome 2.0 but Gnome 1.4.

Anyone took a peek yet at SUN's Java Desktop System? It is supposed have this new 3D desktop interface --- Looking Glass? -- that runs on top of Gnome.

Re: KDE under HPUX

Nelson,

congrats on your hat.

CDE is dead, HP is moving away from it toward gnome. It will probably support it for a very long time.

I as noted in the thread am a regular GNOME user. Besides some environment issues, its fine. My sources say eventually GNOME 2.0 will be ported to depots.

No news on CDE, haven't seen the Sun Interface.

Re: KDE under HPUX

The Gnome is nice but it would be nice to have a KDE option too.

Has anyone been daring/lucky enough to get KDE compiled under HPUX?

Also does anyone have a GNOME version newer than 1.4? GNOME has had some significant advancement since this version.

Re: KDE under HPUX

There is a newer version of Gnome available on Gnome's website(or ximian's). HP has apparently switched directions. CDE is certainly not dead. I expect to see it as the default in the new release of HP-UX later this year.

There are a few brave soles, not myself who have compiled and gotten the gnome release to work on HP-UX. They will be found via the gnome/ximian website.

The stories I've read show its a painful process. As nice as it is, management doesn't care which environment we use to isntall Oracle in, so long as its installed and working. So, since I did Gnome 1.4 on all my boxes, that is where they are stuck.

Re: KDE under HPUX

I pride myself, rather sadly, in having ported KDE beta 3 to HPUX several years ago and giving it to a load of helpdesk users. Even more sadly, porting recent KDE to HPUX is not so easy. In fact, it hasn't been done. arts has been ported and some amount of kdelibs but you are not going to get a working KDE on HPUX for a while.

Your alternative is change the OS, it's almost worth it :)
