kernel configuration
On trying to configure the kernel through SAM i get error: /usr/sbin/config line not within a table boundary exit code -71.

Check your /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log for error messages.
Also run dmesg and look for problems.
# dmesg
Have you had any other problems on the system lately, recently regen'd the kernel, etc.?
How long has the system been up?
# uptime
Although I do not support the idea of "when in doubt, reboot", sometimes if you are running out of resources, a reboot may be the only way to clear the system so that you can continue.
