Kernel drivers for 28640 nic on e55?

We've got an old E55 that we've plugged a 28640 lan card into. The box is running HPUX 11.00, but ioscan does not find the card.

Any ideas which kernel drivers we should add to get this beastie working?

Re: Kernel drivers for 28640 nic on e55?

Hi John,

Does the system recognise the card at all?
Even if the driver is not installed for a
piece of hardware is should show as something
similar to this:

disk 214 8/4.6.0 sdisk UNCLAIMED UNKNOWN HP C5173-7000

This bascially means that the system sees
the hardware but does not have that
particular driver installed in the kernel.

Re: Kernel drivers for 28640 nic on e55?

Michael, nothing at all is visible in
ioscan. We've tried two different cards with the same behaviour. One of our guys here suggested there may be some intermediate bus driver required before ioscan will even notice the card is there..

We've added lan3 and lanmux to the kernel, but until we get something in ioscan that probably won't help.

Re: Kernel drivers for 28640 nic on e55?

Hi again John,

I've had a look in old hardware config
guide I have here that has the 'E' series
in it, but it does not contain the card
number you mentioned. What it does say in
the notes section:
If ThinLan is required, order ThinLan
transeiver P/N 28641B. Second I/O card
provides BNC and AUI. If Ethertwist is
required on second LAN, order EtherTwist
Transeiver P/N 28685B.

Unforunately it does not state what driver
is required for any particular card.

From what I can see, one of those drivers
should work. It could be that the BUS does
not support that card??

Re: Kernel drivers for 28640 nic on e55?

Couple of things here.
1) are you sure of the product or part number of the card?
2) do you have the right driver/sw for this card
3) I think this is more likely tyour problem. The E-class server came with the space for 4 slots, but by default only had a two slot backplane. This means that if you slot the card into one of the two slots that are NOT active, then ioscan will not see it as there is no connector:-}. There was an option to get it with a 4 slot bacjkplnae, or order an upgrade kit.

I guess the quickest suggestion is pull the card and take a look to see if you can physically see a connector.
And as an addendum, which slot is it in, and what other cards do you have in which slots?

Re: Kernel drivers for 28640 nic on e55?

Melvyn, in answer to your questions:

1. the PCB has "28640-80001" marked on it, and on the back is a sticker with "28640-60001".

2. I don't know if we have the right drivers, that's the whole point of this query!!!

3. We have a 4-slot machine. THe card is in slot 9, the other three slots (10,11,12) are empty.

I've just noticed that teh card that's in there now has the led on the back on, which is supposedly indicating that it failed its self test. Apparently the first card we tried did this as well. I guess it's possible they're both bad...
