Kernel Parameters / Swap

Hello everyone.
I will be installing 8GB of ram and 1 additional CPU into an HP K460 running 11.0. This will then be a 4 processor server.

Currently is a 3 CPU with 4GB of ram and 4GB swap configured.

Please advise as to what other kernel changes would likely be necessary to accommodate the addtional ram.

I intend to use pseudo-swap and configured 8GB of swap.

Thanks to all.

Re: Kernel Parameters / Swap

Hi,
Most kernel parameters is more application (software) dependant then hardware dependant. Check for recommendations in the inatallation manuals for the software you plan to install.

The only one that comes to mind is maxswapchunks.

Re: Kernel Parameters / Swap

It would be btter if you add addiotnal swap space (4gb of it) on seperate disk than the primary swap. And set priority to same as that of primary swap.

You may have to tune maxswapcunks paramter to match the total swap space.

Re: Kernel Parameters / Swap

Leif - I would like to use your suggestion for the application I am running, but unfortunately I have a 14 year old application that has to run on old outdated hardware and no manuals at all.

Pete - I will look at the maxswapchunks

Anil - I was contemplating doubling my swap after I post the original request. I will modify the maxswapchunks as well.

My thanks to all of you for your input and quick response to my post.

Have a great day !!

Just a follow up.

Leif, Pete, Anil - did you all get your points I posted?

Thanks again.

Re: Kernel Parameters / Swap

Also modify dbc_max_pct - so it is between say 400 and 800 MB of ram.

So, for 8 gb - set it to say 9 or 8.

All the recommendations will be utilized where possible when hardware upgrade is completed.
