L1000 boot from Fiber

Can an L1000 boot from a fiber channel connected lun. I'm having some problems with the jamaica disks that it's currently using & would like to move the boot volume to a lun on my va7410. It's already connected to the storage array for it's main data volumes.
When the system get's to a main menu prompt though & I do a search for bootable devices none of the fiber luns show up.

Thanks for any assistance.

Gary

Re: L1000 boot from Fiber

check the firmware levels of the L1000 MP, as far as I'm aware, it should be able to boot, as long as the firmware is at a supported level.

I know that newer firmwares as well can discontinue fibre products too, which can be a pain :-(

Re: L1000 boot from Fiber

To successfully boot from fiber, the PDC firmware must be able to recognize your fiber HBAs as bootable. If you have an old L1000 and/or new HBAs, it is likely that you need a PDC firmware upgrade.

Check the system firmware matrix from docs.hp.com, Hardware section:
http://docs.hp.com/en/5449/System_Firmware_Matrix_4-8.html

Find the type of your Fiber HBA card(s) and the required PDC firmware level. Then use STM diagnostics to check your current firmware level. Upgrade the firmware if necessary.

Re: L1000 boot from Fiber

Hi,

even with the sufficient firmware, the fibre luns will never show up aftzer doing a search in BCH. Only the card itself will be shown.
You have to know the hardware path to the lun (optained from ioscan from a running OS on the same computer or by running the "mapper2" offline diagnostics tool.

then you can boot from this lun with

"bo hwpath"

Re: L1000 boot from Fiber

You don't use the internal disks as boot devices?

The boot support for FC cards depends on the firmware level of your system.

First you should locate the device files for your FC card and look up the required minimum firmware for your system:

ioscan -fnCfc
fcmsutil /dev/td0 vpd

http://www.docs.hp.com/en/FCD-SM//en/FCD-SM/FCD-SM.htm

You probably need the current firmware patch PHSS_32704 (11.00 PDC 44.28) or PHSS_32705.depot (11.11).

Now mirror the boot disk to the VA and reduce the mirror on the jamaica disks.

Finally set the bootpath to the VA (setboot -a ).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: L1000 boot from Fiber

thanks all for your help
I'm checking on the firmware verions now.

I already know the hardware path of the lun, the system is up & running now I was wanting to add the lun to vg00 mirror over the env and reduce out the jamaica disks.

I'm not booting from internal disk because there are no internal disks & since money is tight, ordering some has been denied.

Re: L1000 boot from Fiber

Well kinda,
I think the fiber card is bad and won't be able to try this out until I get a replacement.
I think I can get it to work.

Thank you all for your help.
