LAN/9000 Networking "Disaster"

All,

I'm having a problem getting the on-board network interface to work on and old C-class machine. I keep getting the message:

"LAN card on interface unit 0 has a network problem. Check cable for possible disconnection."

Of course, this resets the card as 'down' and no networking can take place. I'm certain that it's a configuration issue, so I pared the netconf and hpether files in /etc/rc.config.d down to their bare minimum, but still no joy. I've booted another C-class box using the same cable and network jack, and that works fine.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I could be missing?

Thanks,
Mark

It might be that the NIC itself is bad and needs to be replaced. If it is the built-in NIC, I think that may entail a replacement of the motherboard.

Re: LAN/9000 Networking "Disaster"

Please run this command:

dmesg

It should show a fault with the btlan or NIC.

OR fire up xstm in x mode and run an excercize on the NIC.

I agree with Patrick. Its probably dead and needs to be replaced.

Re: LAN/9000 Networking "Disaster"

If it truely is an older model C (what model is it?) and you are dealing with the built-in port, there may be a 2nd option if you think the RJ-45 port itself is bad.

The older C's have a dual LAN connection with an older style multi-pin interface. HP calls it the "LAN-AUI". If you have the right adapter you can plug your LAN cable in there, see if it works better.

This AUI port only runs at 10BT however.

Thanks, guys, you may be right about the on-board NIC. I'll keep trying different boxe s until I find one that works.
