lan card down after reboot

Hello,

I have a strange problem with one of my machines (N4000) recently after a reboot which is done on the weekend lan0 (which is our SG heartbeat lan) stays down!

If I run /sbin/init.d/net start it still stays down.

However if i go into lanadmin and "reset" the card first then run net start.... It works.

any ideas?

mark.

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hello,

Is your lan card configured in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf

Is the card set to autonegotiate as is the corresponding card on the other node?

Are you using a crossover cable instead of a hub for this heartbeat network? If so, the above needs to be done.

Hope this helps

Re: lan card down after reboot

netconf is configured! autonegotiation is ON and it connects via a hub/switch.

Also ifconfig works, it will show me correct network information output for the card.

The host itself can ping the IP address connected to the card, however none of the other nodes can ping the address.

Vice-versa as well.....
other hosts cannot ping problem card address and the problem host cannot ping other IP addresses on this network!

hope this helps.
Im beginning to think its going to be hardware/switch realted.

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hi Mark:

Has the ROUTE_GATEWAY or subnet mask changed? Have your network folks changed anything? What was last done on your server before the reboot (and/or why was a reboot done)?

Regards!

Re: lan card down after reboot

Check the following command after reboot

echo "lan ppa n display quit"|lanadmin > file_to_save.

Post the out put.

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hello,

A possible silly question. Do the other nodes have the entry for the heartbeat in /etc/hosts?

Hope this helps

Re: lan card down after reboot

ROUTE_GATEWAY and subnet have not changed!

Maybe the network team have changed something without telling me!

I have 2 other nodes on this site in the cluster and Im sure they are connected to the same heartbeat switch as this problem one is!

Im going to check the wires and see if network team can check my port on the switch!

Re: lan card down after reboot

130.30.0.89 earth_h

some output from lanadmin for you!

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hello,

I noticed that your card is set to half-duplex. Is this the setting on the switch? You will want to check that out to see if there isn't a mismatch there.

Re: lan card down after reboot

can anyone remind me where the Full/Half Duplex settings are for lan cards in HP-UX?

I have a feeling I have to lock this card into Full Duplex mode.

Trouble is, I cant remember where this setting is.

cheers,

mark.

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hello,

You should be able to set this in SAM.

Hope this helps

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hello again,

Networking and Communications --> Network Interface cards.

Select card, Actions ... Modify.

The duplex mode selection is there.

Good luck

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hi Mark:

The settings for LAN cards are dependent upon the type of LAN card. Have a look with 'ioscan -kfnC lan' and match the type of card with this reference:

http://techsolutions.hp.com/fe/configs.html#config_files

Remember, EISA cards can be only half-duplex. Too, whereever possible, avoid auto-negotiation. Set your configuration and your switch to the same setting and avoid it!

Regards!

Re: lan card down after reboot

Hi Mark

Also what is the o/p ot netstat -nr , the best way to run the hearbeat is to directly connect it to the other machine rather than routing to throguth the swtich , bcoz then you need to amthc the mode , negotitaiton etc bcoz then you will ahve to se the default also , and it may take like more than the interval you are sensing in MC service gaurd to autonegotiate the drops in the path.

Re: lan card down after reboot

Checked your lanadmin output.

There is not problem in it. Half duplex setting should not be a problem if it is the same on switch.

One more thing to try-linkloop
if it is ok, then you should try to look at switch side
