LAN card is phycially connected to switch or not?

hi,
what does it means:

# ifconfig lan1
ifconfig: no such interface
root@server:[/root]
# lanadmin -x 1
Speed = 1000 Full-Duplex.
Autonegotiation = On.

root@server:[/root]
# ifconfig lan2
ifconfig: no such interface
root@server:[/root]
# lanadmin -x 2
The link is down. The speed and other link state information
are undefined. The configuration specified for this card is:
Speed = 1000 or 100 or 10 Mbps.
Autonegotiation = On.

root@server:[/root]
#

does it means that lan1 is physically connected to switch but no ip defined to lan1.
and lan2 is not physically connected to switch.

am i right?

Re: LAN card is phycially connected to switch or not?

"no such interface" means you do not configure the NIC. (you do not enable it and get ip to it)
"The link is down. The speed and other link state information are undefined ...." means the cable is unpluged.

Re: LAN card is phycially connected to switch or not?

Hi,

Your right.
lan1 is connected to the switch and doesn't have an ip adres.

Re: LAN card is phycially connected to switch or not?

Yes there is no ip address set for lan1.
And for lan2 I presume that there is no link between the lan port and switch port - either cable unplugged, or faulty cable or port and since autonegotiation is on the port speed is not been set as it would be set after autonegotiation and hence is in the undetermined state.

Re: LAN card is phycially connected to switch or not?

Until the interface is "plumbed" (ie the IP and ARP SAPs are bound between IP/ARP and the Driver) the "transport" (of which ifconfig is a part) knows nothing of the interface.

Assigning an IP address will implicitly plumb the interface, or you can just say ifconfig plumb.

And even if ifconfig did report "UP" that may not necessarily mean that the _operational_ state of the NIC is up, only that the _administrative_ state of the NIC is UP - you should see in the output of lanadmin (eg lanadmin -g mibstats ) two separate lines - one for administrative (do we want to have the interface UP) and one for operational - is the interface actually up.
