LAN Problem

LAN Problem

Hi,

We have installed the HP-UX in BL860 Servers and the installation was completed successfully.

But, the problem is the server ip is not pinging within the LAN. We are able to access the server only via the MP IP.

Below is the lanscan output:
#
# lanscan
Hardware Station Crd Hdw Net-Interface NM MAC HP-DLPI DLPI
Path Address In# State NamePPA ID Type Support Mjr#
0/2/2/0 0x001A4BACD1D4 2 UP lan2 snap2 1 ETHER Yes 119
0/1/1/0 0x001A4BACD1C6 0 UP lan0 snap0 2 ETHER Yes 119
0/1/1/1 0x001A4BACD1C7 1 UP lan1 snap1 3 ETHER Yes 119
0/2/2/1 0x001A4BACD1D5 3 UP lan3 snap3 4 ETHER Yes 119
#

I noticed in the lanadmin output that the interfaces for lan1,lan2,lan3 the operation status is "DOWN" and only for lan0 it is up.

The Server IP(10.200.226.51) is assigned to lan0.

We have similarly installed OS in 4 more servers. And in total, all the 5 servers have the same problem.

I checked with the network cable. Seems no problem with it.

I tried restarting the network services, disabling and enabling the lan0 interface via SAM. But all didn't work.

I need a solution for this problem.

Hope someone will help.

Thanks in Advance!!

Sridhar

Re: LAN Problem

All 5 servers in the same chassis?

First point I would check is the LAN switch position/config within the c7000 chassis from the onboard administrator interface.

Hope this helps!

Re: LAN Problem

Run "linkloop -i 0

This will show you that there is a basic ethernet connectivity via lan0 to lan0 of other server. If this fails - most probably you have cables / switch issue.

From the lanscan output it looks like 2 dual port lan (Giga?) NICs. I'd also check required firmware / driver version for the cards using support matrix from docs.hp.com. And,obviously, putting last ARPA/Lan/Giga lan patches is a good idea overall.

Re: LAN Problem

I would like to mention the BL860c is a blade server for the c7000 or c3000 blade center, the 2 dual-ported NICs are integrated and "directly connected" to the LAN switches in the center.

ioscan looks like this:

lan 0 0/1/1/0 igelan CLAIMED INTERFACE HP PCI
-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
lan 1 0/1/1/1 igelan CLAIMED INTERFACE HP PCI
-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
...
lan 2 0/2/2/0 igelan CLAIMED INTERFACE HP PCI
-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
lan 3 0/2/2/1 igelan CLAIMED INTERFACE HP PCI
-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in

As mentioned above, the onboard administrator is your point to start ...

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: LAN Problem

Hi,

Linkloop test is failing from lan0 to lan1,lan2,lan3.

But, linkloop suceeds from lan0 to lan0 itself.

Below is the ioscan ouput of lan:

# ioscan | grep -i lan
0/1/1/0 lan HP PCI-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
0/1/1/1 lan HP PCI-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
0/2/2/0 lan HP PCI-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
0/2/2/1 lan HP PCI-X 1000Mbps Dual-port Built-in
#

There is a pass through switch which i suspect could be a problem.

But still clueless about this issue!!

Re: LAN Problem

Unless you can confirm you have enough switches installed in the correct bays, you checked the switch configuration and port assignments - I would not suspect a problem on the server blade(s).

Hope this helps!

Re: LAN Problem

Fact that 3 out of 4 NICs have a connection problem hints of something wrong on the switch side. It seems highly improbable (though not impossible) that all the LAN cables that are plugged in the 3 "DOWN" NICs are bad. Could you post the output of the command below for each of the NICs:

# lanadmin -g 0
# lanadmin -g 1
# lanadmin -g 2
# lanadmin -g 3

Re: LAN Problem

Hi Torsten,

I checked from the onboard administrator that the status of the switches seems to be fine.

The funniest part is there was a pre-loaded OS with which the server was working in LAN. What i did is installed the OS manually to specify the various mount points with sizes that i wanted.

This problem has arised since then...

Anyway, below is the output of lanadmin:

Re: LAN Problem

Hi,

Restarting the security settings worked out and gave a solution for this.

How to do that??

#bastille -r
It will take you into the settings mode. There you have to type:
>accept

Once you do this, you need to reboot the server.

This has worked for me!

Anyway, Thanks for everyone's reply.
