lanadmin - operation status = down

lanadmin - operation status = down

We are seeing very slow response times when logging into our old HP-UX 10.20 server. When I go into lanadmin it shows:-
Administration Status = up(1)
Operation status = down(2)
Any ideas what may be wrong? I've tried a reset of the card but no joy. Could this be a hardware problem with the card? The network guy has said its all ok from his side

Re: lanadmin - operation status = down

lets say the Crd In # is 0 does the:
lanadmin -sx 0
give some information lets say 10 half duplex then you should change it to 100FD if the card support it and if the switch is set to this.

lanadmin -X 100FD 0

you will loose connection to the card if you don't do it correctly :-)

Thanks for the replies. I believe the speed is set correctly. I've just noticed that linkloop is failing. Does this indicate a hardware fault?

Re: lanadmin - operation status = down

This appears to be more of a link issue.
If the Admin status is UP, it merans you are able to "talk" to the card. If the Operation status is DOWN, this means there is a problem with the actual operation of the card, normally at a physical level.
If, as you say, linkloop is failing, then I would start investigating the cable, the switch/hub port, and finally the card itself.

Re: lanadmin - operation status = down

try a lanadmin reset on the nic card, I've had to do this twice in the last three weeks...

Re: lanadmin - operation status = down

linkloop is a very low level test and cannot pass through a router, so make sure the two machines are on the same subnet. A simpler test is to look at the LED's on the switch and the LAN card. No lights = no connection, usually due to a faulty cable or more often, a network admin mistake that disabled the switch port.
