Large changes for Steven E Protter (SEP)

I have some big changes coming up and need to share. Last July, for my wife's career prospects, and for the good of my family I made the decision to Emmigrate to Israel.

That means leaving my job, though with VPN that was not strictly necessary. The situation there caused me a great deal of mental grief and stress and after 14 1/2 years, it was time to make a change anyway.

Since last July I've kind of led two lives. It takes a year to do what needs to be done to move ones life from one continent to another. I was not comfortable notifying my employer of my plans for fear that I would not be able to do meaningful work once my plans were public.

In short the system prevented meaningful work and my plans had nothing to do with that.

In preparation for this move, I spoke to some people and kept the news from others. I talked with Pete Randall, his wife, who asked lots of hard questions, Rita Workman, Patrick Walleck, at last years HP World convention.

I also contacted Dan, Cheryl and Bill Hassell and a few others for various reasons.

I wanted to publically thank all of the above for their help. I found it stressful telling some and not telling others.

I'm going to Israel and I think my life will be better.

Eran Maor, is a wonderful, friendly kind person, who happens to work for HP's Response Center in Israel. I've already had the chance to meet with him. His advice on the HP-UX employment market in Israel is invaluable.

In ITRC terms, he will always be the Melech (King) of Israel as far as I'm concerned.

I will be moving in July and coming back to the US to wrap up some private projects and give two seminars at HP World. I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can in San Francisco. I encourage you all to go.

From now until July, I'm kind of a free agent, with extra forum time while I do mundane things like pack and sell my home. It is wonderful to spend extra time with my children.

Please do not be concerned if later this Summer there are prolonged SEP absences from the forums. Its temporary and I'll be back, G-d willing I promise.

I thought about posting this, because it worried me when James R. Ferguson just stopped posting one day and I didn't know why. I think of my fellow forumers as a kind of extended family. I care about you all and like when Bill Hassell left HP, this is a significant change for me and I wanted to share.

So these are my plans. Thanks to each and every one of you for your support. I don't know if I'm going to end up as a consultant with US based clients, or Israeli, or just get another job. I'm hoping to work with big, fast, mission critical servers. Boys and their toys I guess.

For the moment, I'm smelling the roses and spending a lot of high quality time with my children.

Feel free to contact me, there are lots of ways to do that, and if there are any replies, thanks, 1 point per customer, non requested, none required.

Thanks for those who read this lengthy, admittedly off topic post.

hi sep,

thank you for informing us, it shows in your post that u truly care for the people here.

in most (if not all) of your reply given, it has been invaluable and i have taken quite a bit of your advice in assisting with my work. u, clay, bill, peter and james are one of the few forumers who truly know their stuffs.

i am puzzled as well as to why james ferguson left suddenly from this wonderful forum.

last thing, u da man. go with what u truly believe.

Nice to hear from you SEP. I too am puzzled when regular forumers disappear without trace - I've promised myself if I ever leave the world of HP-UX I'll post a goodbye message rather than leaving people puzzled (that is of course if anyone cared that I left!).

Good luck for the future and no points please.

SEP,

Thanks for letting us know instead of just fading away. Man if you were simply moving to a different state I'll offer you the Harley ;-)

My employer is based in Israel as well but they have dual HQ's - one in St. Louis and the other in Tel Aviv. Many many brilliant UNIX gurus in our Israel offices for which I am sure you'll make some acquaintances with them. Who knows - you may end up working for my firm.

Re: Large changes for Steven E Protter (SEP)

Steven,

I just want to congratulate you with your honesty and wish you and your family well in the future.

I went through a similar situation 5 years ago (though not continent wide) when for my wife's career - we moved from Vancouver to Calgary - different Provinces - but it was hard as we left our families and friends behind.

I really believe things happen for a reason.

I'm glad you will stay with us here on the ITRC - you are truly invaluable to us all.

Shalom Aleichem

I'm fairly new to this extended "family", but I will try much harder to make it to SF now just to put faces to names.

The beauty of this family is its global nature. I hope you find all the happiness this world has to give in your new home. Enjoy your children - that time is precious.

Thanks for sharing.

Hello Steven,

Moving one continent to other itself is an adventure! and it becomes more challenging if the weather, culture, society is totally different then one you are accustomed with.
