Legato question

Hi All,

I've got 3 Legato networker servers, since last weekend they are all running the same version ( servers 7.1, clients 6.1.4 )

Is it possible to merge the media and index databases of these 3 servers to 1 ( move all clients to one server )?

I've got a spare server which I can use as a test, all information and documentation is welcome.

Regards,
Robert-Jan

Re: Legato question

Yes, it's possible.

What you should do is migrate all client definitions INCLUDING the client-id to one server, copy the subdirs of /nsr/index to that same server (these are the client indexes) and then rebuild the media database using nsrck.

For the migration you can use nsradmin and some scripts or with 7.1 you could copy the client definitions (seperate files).

You need all old servers' backup media available on the new server. You could do this by converting them to storage nodes, for example.

Re: Legato question

Hi Elmar,

Thanks for your input, do you know where I can find some documentation ? I need to make a detailed report before I can get this approved.

Re: Legato question

Pity I can't send my head ;-)

I don't know if there is documentation available on this. In the past, Legato could do this for you as a consultancy job. One they earned money with... so it was something they didn't want to easy for others. I don't know if this is still the case with NW 7.

But if there is documentation, it is on the docs CD of Networker.

Sorry I cannot help with more info.

Re: Legato question

Hi Elmar,

Pity :-) I could use your brain for a few hours.

Could you give your comment on the attached doc. specially point 7, would this mean I have to scan all my tapes to rebuild the media database ?

Re: Legato question

Merging version 5 servers made this necessary. I think it even might be the case with version 6. At least, they don't completely support it. But for version 7 it should work. I would test it first, but copying the file indexes and then rebuild the media database should do the trick. An inventory to see the volumes should make everything work.

But mind the 'should's en 'would's... I haven't tested this yet (am in the process of a migration like this myself too), so testing is really needed! Perhaps you should use the spare server as the new backup server after you tested everything...

Re: Legato question

Elmar I'll keep this question open for a few days. Maybe someone has done this before and has some kind of documentation. I log a call to our Legato software provider.

Thanks.
