Licence for fsadm defrag

Dear forum people,

I am trying to run a defrag on my L1000's JFS filesystem. When I run:
fsadm -F vxfs -DEde /stuff

I get:
fsadm: You don't have a license to run this program

I do have licences for HP-UX 11i, MirrorDisk/UX, OnLine JFS 3.3 for HP9000 servers.
We use LVM but not Veritas.

I have np problem running the reporting only option with fsadm -F vxfs -DE

What licence do I need ? How do I know if the licences have been installed and are being recognised correctly ?

Regards,

Rob.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Well its the online JFS option that you require, but if you say you have it installed... can you post the output on swlist?

this is what I have for Online JFS

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hello Duncan,

Thanks for the prompt response !
I ran swlist and I couldn't see it in there.

I would have the piece of paper for it though.
I would I install it ?
Is this related to the Veritas manager softare which was recently removed by an engineer as we don't use it and was causing error messages when creating our Ignite recovery tape.

Thanks.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

I belive you'll need to run 'vxenablef -a'.
It should be in inittab:
vxen::bootwait:/sbin/fs/vxfs/vxenablef -a

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Sounds like the engineer removed veritas volume manager - that should affect JFS - depending on the operating environment you have for 11i you might not see online JFS in a plain 'swlist' - try 'swlist -l fileset | grep -i jfs' - what does that return...

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

oops I *meant* to say that VxVM shouldn't affect JFS!

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

You'll need to install Online JFS again, followed by any related patches. The codeword will be on your certificate. The Online JFS product will be on CD #1 of your Application CDROM set. You can verify this by looking at the CD_TABLE_OF_CONTENTS file on the Application CDs (all have the same file which is a comprehensive list of all software on all CDs).

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

You need Advanced Vxfs for this. Look into the /stand/system file that vxadv driver is there or not. If you are having Advanced Vxfs you should have this driver in the Kernel to do this defrag.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hello Duncan,

I ran the swlist as you suggested and got the following:

swlist -l fileset | grep -i jfs

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hi Rob,

I've read this post and agree with the summation by the other guys. I see no choice but to re-install the product.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hi Rob,

You do not have OnlineJFS (also called Advanced VxFS) installed. If you have the license document, you should have the codeword that "unlocks" the application CD so that you can install it. If you don't have the codeword but do have the license or certificate, you can request or retrieve your codeword online at:
http://licensing.hp.com/site=ITRC?LANGUAGE_OPTION=english

As Bill Hassell pointed out, don't forget to retrieve current patches for OnlineJFS.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

You can make a online check of your installed license with "vxlicense -p".

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Rob,

I think you have your answer... reinstall!

Also ask the engineer why this product was removed (assuming it was ever on?)

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hi Duncan,

It was removed due to error/warning messages that occurred when creating the HP-UX ignite recovery tape. At the time, I guess we "ass u me d" we weren't using any Veritas related stuff, only LVM, so off it wen't...

I guess I'll have to re-install. I haven't done this before but I'll give it a go.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hello Hartmut,

I did as you suggested:
>vxlicense -p
and got the result:
vrts:vxlicense: ERROR: No licenses installed

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Hi Robert

Im glad you got lots of responses and a way to resolve your problem.

I would really like to know what the original error message was which an engineer thought required s/w to be removed for.

Re: Licence for fsadm defrag

Robert,
My understanding is that the base JFS 3.3 software as well as the Advanced JFS product that Duncan mentioned. But when you install B3929CA B.11.11 HP OnLineJFS with the HP codeword you also need a license key from Veritas. I didn't see this distinction being made in this thread so I thought I should mention it. HP licensing will acquire this for you. I've attached a list of instructions as well as the link to the doc. But I can't seem to find the form. HP licensing would be abel to help you there.
