Link fails with switch

I've two D-Class box with two NIC cards on each box with HP-UX 10.20 on one and the other with 11.00 OS
When I run a cable from NIC to a HUB the Link works just fine, but when I connect to a cicso switch link never comes up. I've connected many other servers on this switch and they are fine.

The card is set on 100Mbps half -duplex. I tried configuring switch port for autoneg and also with half duplex with no sucesss.

Any clue...?

Hi

Have you tried a crossover cable??

Re: Link fails with switch

Hi:

You don't indicate the card type, Eisa cards don't support auto-negotiation and only handle half-duplex.

If the card isn't an EISA one, do *not* use auto-negotiation -- it's notoriously imperfect. Nail the card in the appropriate configuration file to be 100MB full-duplex and nail the switch to be the *same*.

Re: Link fails with switch

Hi:

Let's not overlook the obvious. I assume since you were using a hub that you now are using a longer/different cable. You may have reached or approached the 100m length; that cable may not be CAT5 rated; or it may simply be a bad cable. Moreover, as mentioned, make sure that you hard set to 100HD on both ends of the connection. I can say that I use the EISA 10/100BT cards in two D-boxes (one 10.20 and the other 11.11) and both work at 100HD with Cicso switches.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Link fails with switch

I already tried with Cross over cable but no luck.

The card type is EISA. INP0500.
What is the command line option for autoneg. I did not find it in lanadmin

Same cable is working absolutely fine with hub and it is Cat 5. and the distance between server and switch is not more than 5Mts

Re: Link fails with switch

lanadmin -X ppa# auto_on

I too prefer to force the speed setting instead of autoneg.

Re: Link fails with switch

You need a straight cable between a switch and a PC. The one from your hub should do nicely.

Does the switch port work with anything else? Is its Link light on? Does anything else work if you connect it to that same port?

Could be the switch port is in shutdown mode or in trunk mode or set to 10 full or some nonsense.

Which cisco switch is it and does it do the CISCO IOS or the Catalyst command line commands?

Logon to the switch and do
sh port
or
sh interface

The first one works on Catalyst, the second on IOS.

You should be able to find the port in the list and see what state the port is in from there. If you need to make a change let me know which type you have and I can tell you what commands you need.
