Linux on HP

Dear Sirs,

How is Linux on HP is placed as compared to HP-UX on PA-RISC ?

I believe Linux uses pc like file system which is much prone to attack to hackers and could be vulnerable with regard to open and weaker file system.

I have heard hpux on pa-risc and aix on power pc were most rugged file systems ever designed.

Please educate me on this ?

Thanks,
Shiv

Compared to hpux on PA-RISC, Linux on Itanium is fairly new combination and a bit unstable. But its improving day by day. Itanium will provide you greater perfomance as they are faster machines.

Linux is an open source, more people are aware of the holes in its code. Hence much prone to attacks.

From a customer point of view you have to decide between price, stability and perfomance.

Re: Linux on HP

Hi Shiv,

Yes, linux on HP is still under improvements and is not really very stable. HPUx on the other hand is perfectly tested and running for years now without problems. The only factor majorly promoting linux is low cost and flexibility. But for production environments I would still not consider cost againt reliability.

Re: Linux on HP

Hi Shiv

HP-UX on PA-RISC is matured compared to Linux. Linux OS is based on simple code and thus vunrable to attacks. However Kernel is simple and efficient.Linux is being promoted a lot now and many standard application vendors including have certified it.Commercially it is cheaper compared to hp-ux

Re: Linux on HP

Go with HPUX, youll get more sleep at night ;) when you dont have to worry about it breaking all the time. Linux is too new on HP hardware.

As far as security, just the fact that every teenager and hacker has the source out there is a bit scary.
Also historically the more common an operating system, the more likely it is to be attacked or hacked remember. Meaning linux is more likely to get attacked.
