load 11i OE then add MirrorUX and GlancePlus

Currently we are running HP-UX 11.0 and are exploring the upgrade to 11i. We own MirrorUX and GlancePlus on each of the servers, but not Online JFS. This means that we are only entitled to install the 11i Operating Environment, but not the 11i Enterprise Operating Environment which includes these two products. I am asking for comments on the plan of installing the 11i operating environment and then installing these two applications. The insert in the sleeve with the CD's says that "we strongly recommend installing a complete OE". It will cost many thousands of dollars to purchase Online JFS on a per cpu basis to entitle us to 11i Enterprise OE for all the servers. I have been running for many years without Online JFS, so I would be hard pressed to justify the expense just to get the 11i Enterprise OE. On the other hand, I am reluctant to go against HP's recommendations.

Re: load 11i OE then add MirrorUX and GlancePlus

Hi,

No need to install complete EOE. just install 11i and on top you can install Mirror and glance plus provided if you have licence.

Re: load 11i OE then add MirrorUX and GlancePlus

Hi Martha:

Personally, I wouldn't be without MirrorDisk/UX, Glance, AND OnlineJFS. The ability to do online LVM maintenance *and* the ability to leverage the additional mount options available with OnlineJFS to improve performance justify the cost of the product in my opinion. OnlineJFS also allows you to do online snapshot filesystem backups.

A side-by-side comparison of the features of both JFS versions can be found here:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B3929-90011/B3929-90011.html

I don't see any problem with licensing the 11i OE and then *adding* an OnlineJFS license. In fact, I have done this at my site. This is not a violation of the recommendation to install a complete OE, rather it is merely the addition of an application on top of it. The appearance of the various OEs is an attempt to simplify installation and licensing and improve the certification (from HP's standpoint) of large collections of software. The choice is yours.

Re: load 11i OE then add MirrorUX and GlancePlus

Hi (again) Martha:

I should clarify my response a bit more. Upon rereading your post, it appears that you want to add only MirrorDisk/UX and Glance on top of the basic OE, and not OnlineJFS too. While I would add OnlineJFS too, as I noted, there is still no problem adding only the two products without OnlineJFS in lieu of licensing the Enterprise OE.

Re: load 11i OE then add MirrorUX and GlancePlus

Just found this interesting link:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/os/11i/filesets.html

That states:

Cautions HP strongly recommends that only a complete OE be installed and that no additions or removal of products in the OE occur. HP-UX 11i OEs have been packaged and tested as complete solutions. A mechanism for handling OE subsets is not available. Installing applications delivered with an OE separate from the entire OE will not include those applications in the OE bundle wrapper, preventing some operations from identifying them as part of the OE. Installing or removing individual products in the OE may also impact the quality of the OE.
If you choose to add or remove individual OE products to an 11i system or remove a product from an installed OE, be sure to specify all filesets listed in this paper for the target product. Omitting a fileset will prevent the product (or other products that depend upon that fileset) from functioning and could hang the system.
