load avaerage on HP itanium
Hi,
We have got a new HP-UX (itanium, 11.22 ia64). We are facing a strange problem. The load vaerage becomes very high (of the order of 6.99, 4.78, 2.73)
and everything becomes very slow. Generally it happens when someone does a console login. If everyone works with telnet to that m/c it looks fine. And whenever it becomes slow the process that takes the bulk of CPU would be always 'X'.
If I use 'top' at that point of time it shows 'X' to be using more than 100% of CPU.
but strangely at the top it shows the CPU to be idle (30-40%) and SYS (60- 70%).
suggest a way out of this problem
TIA

Re: load avaerage on HP itanium
Hi
cp /usr/dt/config/Xservers /etc/dt/config/
remove line in Xservers . comment it out
# * Local local@console /usr/bin/X11/X :0
Restart X
It is trying to start on a non graphic console.

Re: load avaerage on HP itanium
Steve,
I was out of station, so saw your reply today only.
It is not the problem with the mismatch of the
graphic console, I didn't specify the problem properly in my last mail.
Actually the problem (sudden increase in the load average and there by m/c becoming very very slow) happens only after 2 or 3 days of uptime. but it happens when someone does a login and the 'X' takes the complete resource.
If I reboot the system and do a login it would be fast and fine no problems.
thanks
