Is it possible to have more than one logical device that maps onto the same physical device.

Re: logical device

Your question is not clear. Is it related to device files or LVM?

If you are asking whether same physical device have multiple device files pointing to it, the answer is yes. They will have diffrent names but the same major and minor numbers.

Re: logical device

Lokesh,

I suppose you are talking of having more than one logical volume on a disk. Yes it is quite possible. You can have as many as 255 LVOL's on a single disk.
Moreover a single LVOL can spread across two or more physical disks as well.

Re: logical device

Lokesh,

it is possible to have more than one logical device that maps to the same physical device. However, each one of the logical devices represent a separate logical volume

Re: logical device

Hi Lokesh

All physical devices will not have more than one logical device e.g. CPU, RAM etc will have fixed logical device. Disks, tapes, FC HBAs etc... will have more than one logical devices.

Re: logical device

Since your question does not give much detail about what you are after, as Clay S. says, using the force, I am guessing you are trying to locate a functionality over another UNIX flavor or even another operating system. Since you have given low points to LVM related answers, I am under the impression this was not what you are looking for.

If what you are looking for something like Open VMS logical definitions for the hardware devices on your system, the answer is: they are not available on unix. At least not in the same way.

Again, my response is reliant on an assumption. If you can tell your purpose, as what you are trying to do with the logicals, more detailed answers will follow I am sure.
