Low Memory utilization but high paging.

Hi,

Our server have low memory utilization but high paging (in and out).

What do you think caused this?

Re: Low Memory utilization but high paging.

To add some more detail:

The memory utilization is constant at 4% but the page in and out values are more than 20.

Re: Low Memory utilization but high paging.

Roel,

Thanks for the output, one thing, usually when it comes to paging, you want to pay special attention the po column out of the vmstat command, usually a healthy system will show values of 0 or close to it all the way, yours was showing 0 all the time.

To me your system looks just fine, where did you get the information that your system is paging out?

Jaime.

Re: Low Memory utilization but high paging.

Hi Jaime,

I'm running vmstat and swapinfo scripts in cron.

swap_info.sh
#--------------------------------------------
# Variable Definition
#--------------------------------------------
dat=`date "+%m/%d/%y %a %H:%M"`
filename=`date "+%m%d%y_%a.txt"`

#--------------------------------------------
# Gather Data
#--------------------------------------------
sw=`swapinfo -m|grep memory`

#--------------------------------------------
# Write Captured data to datafile
#--------------------------------------------
echo $dat $sw >> /tmp/Mon/data/swapinfo/swapinfo.txt

vm_stat.sh
#--------------------------------------------
# Variable Definition
#--------------------------------------------
dat=`date "+%m/%d/%y %a %H:%M"`
filename=`date "+%m%d%y_%a.txt"`

#--------------------------------------------
# Gather Data
#--------------------------------------------
sw=`vmstat`

#--------------------------------------------
# Write Captured data to datafile
#--------------------------------------------
echo $dat $sw|awk ' {print $1, $2, $3, $34, $35}' >> /tmp/Mon/data/vmstat/vmstat.txt

It bothered me when I get a 4% memory utilization and more than 20 page in and out. My understanding is paging happens only if the memory gets full. But in this case the memory is only 4%.

Re: Low Memory utilization but high paging.

Hi Roel,

Check for memory-mapped files. When a memory-mapped file is posted, a page out will occur.

"Page in"'s can generally be ignored. They are quite common, and occur whenever a new process starts.

Re: Low Memory utilization but high paging.

Roel,

I just noticed one thing, I was about to ask you how do you know that your memory utilization is just 4%, it sound incredible low to me.

Then I notice that in swapinfo it says that the memory line is 4%, but memory here is not to be confused with physical memory or RAM, the memory line refers to pseudo-swap.

If you really want to know how much memory your system has free, you might want to check the memory line in the dmesg command or go to sam, performance monitors, system properties and memory.

I insist, your system looks fine to me for the moment.

Jaime.
