low througput with C200 workstation at backup

Hi there,
I backup two C3600(HP-UX11.0), one B200(HP-UX11.0) and one 720 (HP-ux10.20) from an Windows-NT computer with veriats software.
It works fine. But I have a performace problem with the C200 workstation. The C3600 workstations have a throughput rate of 104,5 MB/min, the 720 workstation has a throughput rate of 22,7 MB/min and the C200 workstation has a throughput rate of 39,1 MB/min. The C3600 has a 100 MBit, the 720 has a 10 MBit and the C200 has a 10/100 MBit networkcard. The 10/100 networkcard from the C200 is configured to 100 MB and the networkport is correctly set. Have anyone an idea?
Thanks for any help.
Bye, Annette

You did not say if the C200 was idle when backing up or not, maybe there are higher priority processes going.

If not, and they are all network conencted the same, then it has to be something with the network card or conection.

Have you run glance on the machine to see what is going on with the CPU, memory, disk, and network?

Re: low througput with C200 workstation at backup

Hi Annette,

This is a difficult comparison to make. The speed of the backup can be influenced by the makeup of the data. For example, backing up a rather small number of large files will yield much higher throughput that a large number of small files. The total amount of data might be the same but the overhead is very different.

I would first transfer via ftp a fairly large file both to and from each of your boxes and note the transfer rates. This will isolate the network aspect of your situation. My next task would then be to do a find . -print | cpio -o > /dev/null on each box and note the performance statistics. This will isolate the disk access aspect. One of these should point you in the right direction.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: low througput with C200 workstation at backup

Hi,

normally the machine is idle at backuptime. But I had a look at the machine with glance during the backup and I saw that the CPU Utilization is always 100%. I think it is not a problem of the network but from the CPU.
Thanks for your hints, because I was blind about other problems like the network.

Re: low througput with C200 workstation at backup

Hello,
The backup rate for your directories highly depend upon the memory on the machine.
I assume and guess that your c3600 machine has more amount of memory than the other machines.
Higher the memory higher is the backup rate.
Hope this helps.

Thanks

Re: low througput with C200 workstation at backup

Hi,
in the C200 is more memory as in the C3600. So I think it couldn?t be the problem. The cpu-utilitation is relatively high during the backup. It is the problem since I have changed from 10.20 to 11.0. Perhaps I had to change some kernel parameters. But at the moment I have no idea, which one.

Re: low througput with C200 workstation at backup

Hello,
More memory I meant the physical memory that is free.If you lot of processes running on the machine using the memory it doesn't count.
That was my point.

Thanks.
