lpstat question

lpstat question

Does anyone know why the "-i" option to lpstat is undocumented and if it is safe to use. It seems to get around the lpstat hang problems associated with remote printers.

Is this option supported by different UNIX vendors.

Thank you

Re: lpstat question

It is documented in my manual (HP-UX Reference Release 10.0), as "inhibit the reporting of remote status". I would ask - why does a normal lpstat hang forever if a remote printer is not responding?? It should timeout and get on with life...

Re: lpstat question

I did a man from the command line on a HP-UX 11.0 machine and it states "-i Inhibit the reporting of remote status".

Re: lpstat question

Hi Marc:

I use it on HP-UX 10.20, it is saft to do so.
For my system, I have 18 spoolers, 2 remote printers, and over 100 physical priters, I found it is very useful when I only want to know the information of some specific priters, you can use
# lpstat -i
or # lpstat -i -o
