LVD SCSI devices on a K Class system

I have a K Class system running HP-UX 11.0 64bit with the September 2003 HWE Patch bundle installed.

I have connected an LVD SCSI device to an HP-PB SE SCSI card. Part # 28655-60001. The system can see the tape drive and assignes device files to the drive but when we try to do a tar command using any of the device files it fails.

I have connected the tape drive to an N Class system with an A5150A LVD card and the drive works fine. I have also connected it to a B1000 workstation on the SE port and it works fine.

Does anyone know if the 28655-60001 has any known problems with LVD devices or are there any patches that may help.

The device is an Adic FastStor 2 Super DLT. I have also tried a Quantum DLT8000 with the same results.

Re: LVD SCSI devices on a K Class system

Hi,
What does it show in

# ioscan -fnC tape

It should sapcify the S/w State as CLAIMED. Also check whether it is loading the relevant driver (stape) in the Driver field.

Everything appears to be OK as far as the ioscan goes. Below is the output from an
ioscan -funC tape command.

Re: LVD SCSI devices on a K Class system

DLT8000 will not run on an HP-PB card. It will run on HSC or PCI bus.

It is quite possible that this Adic FastStor 2 Super DLT falls into the same category.

Re: LVD SCSI devices on a K Class system

Your best bet is to use an HSC HVD/FWD SCSI card in conjunction with an LVD/HVD SCSI bus convertor. I have used one of those on a K-box and it worked fine. One source of such a convertor is Blackbox Corp and Parallan makes ones as well although I have not tried it.

Fast tape drives were never supported on the 28655 and even if you could get it to work the unit would be severely starved for data.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: LVD SCSI devices on a K Class system

I've installed the QPK1100 Patch bundle from Sept 2003 but with the same results.

Looks like this card just won't work with LVD devices.

I believe that I will go with a Fibre / LVD SCSI Bridge and use them that way.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and ideas.

I agree with Clay that even if I can get it to work the SE bus speeds will be a real performance issue.
