LVM: vg[1]: pvnum=0 (dev_t=0x1f014000) is POWERFAILED

Hi all,
I logged on our omniback server and do a bdf, it just hang ...
I then check syslog and dmesg and got the power failure message with only one line:
LVM: vg[1]: pvnum=0 (dev_t=0x1f014000) is POWERFAILED
I then ioscan the disks and got the NO HW path problem.
disk 2 8/0/19/0.4.0 sdisk NO_HW DEVICE SEAGATE ST318404LW
/dev/dsk/c1t4d0 /dev/rdsk/c1t4d0

Run the cstm and got the path file do not exist message.
cstm>sel dev 5
cstm>info
-- Updating Map --
Updating Map...
cstm>infolog
-- Information --
Information Tool Log for SCSI Disk on path 8/0/19/0.4.0 file does not exist.

I hope this is not a bad disk. What should I do next? I just hope this is a timeout problem, the omniback software is installed in this disk...

Thanks for your help,

Jane

Chances are VERY good that this disk is toast.

Since ioscan is showing NO_HW and diagnostics are not working either, it is almost certain that you have a bad disk.

The next thing to do is call HP to get the disk replaced, and if you don't have this disk mirrored, plan on restoring OB with whatever DR type tools are there.

Very likely it's dead (c1t4d0). Depending on how vg01 is setup (mirroring or not) you would have to get the disk replaced and restore the LVM configuration (if it's mirrore) and sync the disk. Or if not mirrored a restore from tape is in order. You may want to double check the disk "physically" to make sure.

Hi,
Thanks for the response, I went to the machine and it is an external disk and the disk LED (YELLOW) is flashing. I think I need to replace the disk.

Patrick or chan, can you point me the links on how to restore OB after replacing the disk. I donot think the disk is mirrored. but the OB database is backuped up on tape.

Re: LVM: vg[1]: pvnum=0 (dev_t=0x1f014000) is POWERFAILED

If after power cycling disk will not be alive then it's completely dead. If it will come back then do full backup and use STM to test it. I would better replace this disk.
For ST318404LW HP product number is C6398B, and HP part number is C6398-69003

Go to this link:

http://ovweb.external.hp.com/lpe/doc_serv/

Scroll down the list until you see OmniBackII, click it, then you will see the list of versions in the right hand box, click the appropriate version #, then click the Search button.

You should now have a list of OB manuals. You probably want the Administrators Guide. Within that guide should be a chapter on Disaster Recovery. Have a read through that as it should outline the steps you will need to take.
