Solution

Re: lvol

Use the command # vgdisplay to display the volume group to
which you want to add the logical volume. Look for the Free PE value.
# man vgdisplay

Re: lvol

do a vgdisplay on the volume group. Then multiply the Free PE by the PE Size (Mbytes) and that is how much space you have in Meg in the volume group that is free

Re: lvol

Do a vgdisplay -v on the VG that the lvol is to be in. Look for the number of "Free PE" (physical extents). PE's are typically 4 MB each but the PE Size (Mbytes) will be displayed as well. Multiply Free PE by PE size and you'll know how much space you have to work with.

Or use SAM.

Re: lvol

Hi!

Use the vgdisplay command. Do a man on vgdisplay for more details.

Why did I know, as soon as I saw that V Makarov was from Russia, that our dear friend Lubomir would be the first to respond?

Thanks. I do not understand why everybody write the same.

Re: lvol

vgdisplay -v with the volume group name will give you all the necessary information including the amount of space available in the volume group for your new file system.
Cooperation is doing with a smile what you have to do anyhow.

Re: lvol

well, in my case, no one had responded yet, we all must have been typing at the same time...just some people submitted faster than others ;)

Re: lvol

Do you really think you're fooling anyone, "Lubomir"?

Re: lvol

V Makarov,

I always give people the benefit of the doubt & this will be no exception.
In case you didn't know, you *can* assign MORE than ten points total in the thread.

But the way "Lubomir" seems to always get the 10 from *new* user posts from the area of the world from which you claim to come, makes the whole thing unseemly.
I'll guarantee you that if this continues, there will probably be some sort of censure for the offending users if indeed trickery is discovered. And remember they can track you via IP - Lubomir is not *totally* anonymous - nor will the enabling users.

My 2 cents,
Jeff

Re: lvol

Good call Jeff....I felt kind of jipped when I gave my answer at the same time, but I guess because his is displayed before mine I get 0 points? For those of us who are struggling to get a hat, every point counts, and having to race to get the first answer in would cause us either to:
A: Not even bother answering, cause someone would prob get it first.
or
B: Stop giving complete answers in an attempt to shave off some seconds so we just get the "first reply".

I think that even if the answers are duplicate, you should rate them all equally based on the value of the reply, within reason. If a person answers the question an hour later then no, they are just trying to mooch points, unless they are offering up additional information....

Re: lvol

to display the size of an lvol do

lvdisplay -v /dev/vg00/lvol1 | grep "LV Size"

if you want to determine the free space for the VG you can do

#begin script
PES=$(vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00 | grep "PE Size" | awk '{print $4}')
FPE=$(vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00 | grep "Free PE" | awk '{print $3}')
((freespace=$PES*$FPE))
echo $freespace
#end of script

Re: lvol

You're too late, John. Lubomir has already given himself his points.

Thanks, JP - I hadn't even noticed that extra bit of subterfuge.

Re: lvol

Wow - this is really sad....it there really were "points police" then IMHO - they should reset his points to ZERO...

Re: lvol

It's sad, but it's also funny. LM/Lubomir has gotten about 40 points a week for the last two weeks, so at this rate he is only about a year away from a crown. I guess he wants to be a 'self-made wizard'. Just think of all the people he will have to thank in his congratulatory thread! :)

Re: lvol

Well, are we sure that he is cheating? seems like if you wanted to cheat, you would just keep posting replies, and give each one a 10...one message could have 25 replies, and each with 10 points, it would be a quick 250 points...

Re: lvol

Ken,

Have a look at last week's thread, in which S.K. "outed" him:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x62478b82cc91d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

If you follow each of the links that S.K. points out, and also look at each of the question author's profiles, I think you'll alter your generous assessment slightly.

Re: lvol

Point taken....no doubt in my mind as soon as I saw the one for "disk drive LEDs status indications" with the answer posted only two minutes later....either this guy is a genius with a photographic memory, or he already had the answer ready to paste as the question got asked ;)

I still dont understand why he doesnt just save time and give himself a bunch more points in a single thread....but then again, I also dont understand how he gets satisfaction from giving himself points. :P

I think it's kind of like e-mailing your self, if you remember the old joke. If you don't remember it, I don't think I can explain it here.
