mail question

Hi,
When i try to send an e-mail from one of my hp box ....i 'm seeing the below message and also the mail did not go through. what is wrong.

Your /etc/mail directory is world-writable. Change the permissions. Ours (dev. env.) are set to 555.
No matter where you go...there you are.

And also i had to change /etc permission as 555.

Both /etc and /etc/mail have bad permissions. This implies that there may be MANY more bad directory permissions. Did someone run the chmod -R 777 command, possibly trying to 'fix' a permissions problem? You may have a *lot* more work to do to repair the damage. 777 is a big red flag that something is wrong.

You can use swverify to check permissions. The -F option can be used to correct them.

(Unfortunately I don't see an entry for /etc/mail but at least the files may be checked?)
