make recovery on DLT Tape?

Hi everybody!

A big question for you!

I usually run make_recovery on DDS tapes...but a remote server I want to backup has NO dds tape...it has only DLT tape!

Do anybody know if it is possible to run make_recovery on DLT tapes???

Thanks in advance!

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

Yes make_recovery / make_tape_recovery will run fine on a DLT drive.

By the way, you should really be using the newer make_tape_recovery command. It has many more features than the older, obsolete, make_recovery.

Hi Emanuele,

DLT is no problem.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

It is possible to take ignite on DLT tape. (is it is connected locally to your server)

It is just like taking ignite recovery on tape device.

If you are asking that you want to take ignite rcovery of a server on remote tape drive, that is not possible. In this case you can create a network recovery of the server and later on put it on tape.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

Emanuele,

first you should upgrade to a current Ignite version (4.4)

second you should use make_tape_recovery

third you can use DLT7000 or DLT8000 and also LT01 (have not tried LTO2 yet)

you *cannot* use the old DLT4000 drives (typically attached to SE-SCSI on K- or D-class systems), though make*recovery will "complete successfully" you cannot boot from those DLT 4000.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

Bernhard,

I beg to differ. I have successfully used a DLT4000 tape drive to do make_tape_recovery's and I *have* successfully booted from them.

I have done this on an L2000, a J5000, a C3000, and I think a C200.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

If its a tape drive and ioscan sees it, make_tape_recovery, which should be used instead of the obsolete make_recovery will write no problem.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

Thanks to everybody...I'm going to assign points!

The last question:
ioscan -fnCtape give me this data:

Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
=====================================================================
tape 0 0/8/0/0.3.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE QUANTUM DLT8000
/dev/rmt/0m /dev/rmt/c4t3d0BEST
/dev/rmt/0mb /dev/rmt/c4t3d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/0mn /dev/rmt/c4t3d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/0mnb /dev/rmt/c4t3d0BESTnb
tape 1 0/8/0/0.4.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE QUANTUM DLT8000
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/c4t4d0BEST
/dev/rmt/1mb /dev/rmt/c4t4d0BESTb
/dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c4t4d0BESTn
/dev/rmt/1mnb /dev/rmt/c4t4d0BESTnb

******************

So, can I run
make_recovery -ACv -d /dev/rmt/0m
???
Now I'm going to study make_tape_recovery...

thanks in advance!

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

Emanuelle

You need to use /dev/rmt/0mn, i.e use the no-rewind device.

Further more, there is some hardware that can not be Ignitted off a DLT. All modern HP machines can be but I think it was the "T" that couldn't and there may be others so be warned.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

Hi,
You have to use
make_tape_recovery -ACv /dev/rmt/0mn.

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

If you want to use the newer, more robust, make_tape_recovery command here is the command line I use:

# /opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/?mn -I -v -m tar -x inc_entire=vg00

Re: make recovery on DLT Tape?

From an old Ignite release note:

4.4 DLT Tape Boot Issues
=========================

DLT is attached to HP 9000 Enterprise servers via Fast-Wide
Differential interface cards. DLT boot WILL NOT work when
attached via single-ended SCSI. DLT boot IS NOT supported for
systems that use NIO Fast-Wide Differential SCSI cards (Part
number 28696A). The matrix below explains systems (by class)
along with the bus types required for DLT to be recognized as
a bootable media device.

CLASS | BUS | SCSI Interface Card | DLT boot support? | Notes
----------------------------------------------------------------------
K-Class | HSC | A2969A FWD | yes | 1,2
| NIO | A28655A SE, A28696A FWD | no |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
D-Class | HSC | A4107A FWD | yes | 2
| Core | | no |
| EISA | | no |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
T-Class | HSC | A3644A FWD | no |
| NIO | A28655A SE | no |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
N-Class | PCI | FWD | yes |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
L-Class | PCI | FWD | yes |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
V-Class | PCI | A4800A FWD | yes | 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------
E-Class | NIO | A28655A SE, A28696A FWD | no | 3
--------------------------------------------------------------------
G-Class | NIO | A28655A SE, A28696A FWD | no | 3
--------------------------------------------------------------------
H-Class | NIO | A28655A SE, A28696A FWD | no | 3
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I-Class | NIO | A28655A SE, A28696A FWD | no | 3

Notes:

1. This class system has two internal bus types, HSC and NIO.
DLT is only bootable from the HSC bus.

2. The HSC and GSC busses are the same busses. These terms are used
interchangeably.

3. NIO and HP-PB refer to the same bus.

4. IPR (Independent Peripheral Release). A firmware upgrade
(at least 4.3, product number B6044AA) is required to enable tape
boot for the V-Class. The release date for firmware upgrade
version 4.3 is September 1998. Contact your HP representative
about required firmware upgrades.
