make_recovery to remote destination

Hi,

I have two clustered HP-UX systems with only one of them having a tape drive. What are the possibilities of using make_tape_recovery to a remote tape drive.

What about make_net_recovery. What options can I use to accomplish this? Is there some special configuration required? I've only installed the ignite software, without any additional configuration.

In addition, I was informed that a tape created with make_net_recovery isn't self sufficient, it'll need to use some files stored on the system ... is this info authentic ... any wokaround to this?

Thanks and Regards,

HI Alvi,

Yes, you can use make_net_recovery to ignite remote server.

Check this document for details.

Hi Alvi

I use make_net_recovery but it only backs up the essential OS system files. A further backup of the data is also required.

Re: make_recovery to remote destination

Ignite is not recommended for data backup - only OS. I would recommend either fbackup or DataProtector for data backup. DP has the advantage that it will write to a remote tape drive.

Re: make_recovery to remote destination

Thanks for the replies.

So, it seems my purpose is best served with make_net_recovery ... tha man page is too confusing.

I simply need to create a make_recovery tape for one system on a remote tape. What options do I use for make_net_recovery.

I tried make_net_recovery -i, which should be the most intuitive, as it says it is interactive mode ... but this option simply returns the options help page.

I tried make_net_recovery -s myserver, assuming it should backup vg00 for the local system onto the tape of the remote server "myserver". this gives some erros about nfs issues.

I appreciate any assistance.

thanks and regards,

Re: make_recovery to remote destination

I would recommend using the GUI - it's more user-friendly for the inexperienced user.

Log on to the ignite server and run ignite - it should default to the GUI.

If you are using a remote PC, set up a script:

DISPLAY=xx.xx.xx.xx:0.0
export DISPLAY
ignite

where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of your PC.

Re: make_recovery to remote destination

make_net_recovery is indeed the tool you need to use. However, it will NOT write directly to the tape drive of a remote server. That is NOT supported. What you will have to do is create a normal make_net_recovery archive of the system without a tape drive and store that image on the system with the tape drive. You can then take that image and write it to tape. However, since the machine you are creating this for does not have a tape drive, what good does the tape do you?

For more information on how to do all of this have a look at the file /opt/ignite/share/doc/makenetrec.txt. You should also have a look at the Ignite/UX administrators guide located here:
