make_tape_recovery and extending root volume

I need to resize (/) root volume to be able to upgrade from 10.20 to 11.i. I have been told to use ignite and use the make_tape_recovery. I have ran the make_tape_recovery -A -I -d "Server name /Date " -a /dev/rmt/0mn. This was sucessful. I must now boot from the tape drive P0 and do not interact with ipl (i think), this is what I have read. I have not done this yet. My question is will the ignite backup put all files back in root after I get in and increase the size? Has anyone used this to increase root sucessfully and can anyone give me some tips on do's and dont's?
Thanks

Hi Sonya,

Is it necessary that you upgrade the OS. I would suggest you to load the new OS fresh on the system. This will save a lot of headache.

Hope this helps.

Re: make_tape_recovery and extending root volume

Sonya,

First, please don't attempt an "upgrade", as it will most likely fail, resulting in countless hours lost for nothing.

BUT, you MUST (really more like should) make TWO make_recovery (with -A) tapes of your existing 10.20 system. ALSO, make at least TWO verifiable backups of your non-root disks (anything other than vg00).

Install 11i with a FRESH / COLD / VIRGIN install (whatever you want to call it). Make root (and /stand) the size you need for future needs.

I agree with Sanjay, it is much easier to install the new OS, but to answer your question, when the ignite starts, it will prompt you set up your filesystems, so you can change them on an ignite recover

Re: make_tape_recovery and extending root volume

I wanted to do a fresh install, however our hp openview is on this box and the hp openview guy does not want to re-install and configure that application. I think I am stuck trying to do an upgrade unfortunately. Will all files and directories under root be copied back from the make_tape_recovery process or only the basic files/directories having to do with the os. IE I have an nsr directory under root? Will I need to restore it from legato or will the ignite copy files back after I resize the root volume?

Re: make_tape_recovery and extending root volume

sonya,

you can export the volume group, attach the new disk and import the volume, so you will not have to restore /nsr from legato.

man vgimport

Re: make_tape_recovery and extending root volume

If you do a make_tape_recovery, I would recommend the following:

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/?mn -I -v -x inc_entire=vg00

This will insure that you get your ENTIRE VG00.

Now, when you boot from the tape, and do you LV resizing, it will re-install ALL files that are on the tape.

I would go ahead and do 2 make_tape_recovery's just in case you happen to have 1 tape go bad at some point. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: make_tape_recovery and extending root volume

Hi Sonya,

Ignite will backup complete data under the root VG (vg00) so if the directory / filesystem where your legato files are stored is under the root vg it will be backed up using ignite. However as far as upgrade is concerned, upgrading the os is not the only thing involved. you will probably have to upgrade all the application softwares and who knows what you may have to reconfigure in openview to make it work with 11i. If you still want to do the upgrde, we wish you good luck. Personally i will never do a upgrade if i have a choice, which i normally have.

good luck to you. you may need it.
