make_tape_recovery and Vpars

Hi,

7420 with one stand-alone npar; and another npar with 3 vpars. HPUX v11.11. The client has engaged a DR vendor to provide DR facilities. This vendor wants make_tape_recovery backups of all vpars to recover from. But not all the vpars have local tape drives. And I'm aware there are issues with recovering vpars from tapes, i.e. whole npar must be shutdown whilst each vpar is recovered.

Has there been any improvement with vpars and Ignite tape backups? The client is not keen on a local tape on each vpar. Can you suggest any other solutions?

We have an independent 2470 used as an Ignite server. This does have a local tape drive. If I did an Ignite tape backup of the ignite server, would the DR vendor be able to recover the ignite server from tape; then recover all the vpars from the ignite server? Assuming all hardware compatabilities etc.

thanks, Greg

Hi,

As make_tape_recovery for vpar is not recommended, you may go for make_net_recovery and make the images.

or take full backup of the filesystems using tar ..

Hi Greg,

You can use make_net_recovery to ignite servers or partition that do not have a tape drive.

Check this document for details.

Re: make_tape_recovery and Vpars

Shalom Greg,

I think make_net_recovery to an NFS mount point and a backup of that mountpoint will suffice. Make suer the Ignite server has a tape drive.

Recovery process.

Boot off the tape to rebuild the Ignite server, boot the other vpar/npar's off the Ignite server to recover off the make_net_recvoery images.

Make sure the 2470 has enough disk to hold all those Ignite images.

Re: make_tape_recovery and Vpars

With VPars A.03.03 you can use tapes, as there is a new option to add when creating or modifying a VPar.
Just as you can specify :TAPE
This allows you to install and recover from an Ignite tape.
