make_tape_recovery of mirrored disks

Hi everybody,

I would like to make recovery tapes of my system that has mirrored disks. My internal disk is included in vg00. My external disks are included in vg01. Those 2 volume groups need to be backup without mirroring. How can I do it?
And when it's done, what about recovery?

Thx!

Agi.

Re: make_tape_recovery of mirrored disks

When you use make_recovery it does not normally backup anything other than VG00 and it does not restore mirroring. After a reinstall after booting from your ignite tape you then manually reactivate the mirroring, and also add back in your other non-VG00 VG's.

Normally we backup all non VG00 VG's using a separate backup, say using fbackup, before reinstalling vg00 using the make_recovery tape. After the reinstall the other VG's can sinmply be reimported with no data loss - but its important to have a separate backup of them just in case.

Re: make_tape_recovery of mirrored disks

Agi,

You need to run

make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/Xmn -I -v -x inc_entire=vg00

This will back up your entire root volume group. Other data should be backed up by conventional means.

To recover, insert the tape, boot from the tape drive, and follow the menu steps (much like an install) to rebuild your system. When you're done, you will need to re-establish your mirrors because they won't be there, you'll just have recovered the primary disk.

Re: make_tape_recovery of mirrored disks

Agi,

As Pete said, you should backup vg00 with Ignite and vg01 with other backup utility ( Omniback, fbackup, Netbackup etc ) But vg01 can also be backed up using Ignite. Below are the commands.
To include only vg00
# make_tape_recovery -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn -x inc_entire=vg00
To include both vgs
# make_tape_recovery -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn -x inc_entire=vg00 -x inc_entire=vg01
