make_tape_recovery

HI guys, WE ARE DOING A dISASTER RECOVERY DRILL. And i wanted to ask thta is it ok if i include an external vg like vg01 in the make_tape_recovery tape which also has vg00 on it. There is not much data on the external vg but if i dont include it in the ignite tape then i have to recreate the logical volumes manually while i am on the site.
Let me know if doing so is a good idea and if not then y not.
Thanks

Re: make_tape_recovery

Hi:

If you want to let Ignite create non-vg00 volume groups, then perform your 'make_tape_recovery' specifying just one file from the non-vg00 volume group (VG) to trigger re-creation of the VG. See this tip (#4-9):

Re: make_tape_recovery

I can't speak for anyone else but I have done thus before without issue. I would just make sure to add a -I so that you can make the install interactive in case you need to make any changes.
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"

Re: make_tape_recovery

that was a -I (dash Capital eye)

well, I use '-i' for interactive recovery!

Re: make_tape_recovery

Thanks Srini, but there is a difference between the -i and -I. Try

# man make_tape_recovery

I am talking about the ignite being interactive at boot.

Re: make_tape_recovery

This will work. Ignite is slower to backup and restore than other utilities, which is a good reason not to use it for large amounts of data.

However, if you include both VG's in the make_tape command, it will backup and restore all of the info.

I have done small systems this way in the past. My criteria always was that the entire ignite backup had to fit on one DDS-2 tape.

As others have said, make sure you do the interactive restore.

Re: make_tape_recovery

I use this type of command for a DDS :
make_tape_recovery -Av -a/dev/rmt/0mn -t MyServerYYYYMMDD â I

the -I option is quiet important cause if you forget the DAT in the server / if you reboot the server you dont make a recovery automatic.

You can use too a server in order to make cross ignite save.
