Maximum user logins under HP-UX

We have bought a two-user license for our HP-UX 11.00 K370.
Since our K370 has multiple network cards I am considering moving the ftp for customers from a Windows NT machine to the Unix since the data is generated there anyway.
I have let several users (six at the moment) connect to the K370 under HPUX with telnet and their own ID and it works fine.
How should I read this 'two-user' lincense. Does this mean I can connect many more as well ??

Two users may login via hardwired terminals, 1 user + the console.
Many users may login accross the lan.

Re: Maximum user logins under HP-UX

The user license is policed by HP-UX at the interface level.

A LAN card is deemed to be one interface.

So with a two user license, you could have
- the console
- any amount of users on lan0

or
- the console
- the internal modem

In the latter case no logins would be allowed from the LAN.

I don't know if this is how 'two user' is supposed to be interpreted in licensing terms but this is the way it works.

Maarten:

The license count refers to physical interfaces. Therefore the LAN counts as one and you can have lots of users connection and only count once.

As many as you want coming across the LAN. You may encounter other issues with the number of users but those would be kernel params.

1 console + 1 LAN = 2 users

Re: Maximum user logins under HP-UX

to my knowledge, you should purchase the correct license level for the number of users who may be connected at any one time, irrespective of how they connected to the system.

Re: Maximum user logins under HP-UX

I queried HP on this as we had a system with a 2 user license and far more users connecting. The official stance is that the machine is not supported if you have more than 2 users connecting at any given time. This machine has 3 lan interfaces and 1 console, so there isn't any policing based on network cards.
