MC Service Guard on a single server with 2 NIC cards

I have a single HPUX 11.0 server that has 2 NIC cards.
I'd like to configure the extra NIC as a failover.
I have MC/Service Guard but do not have Auto Port Aggregation.

I've been looking in the documentation and it's always referring to multiple nodes in the cluster.
Any ideas where I can find info on doing this?
Is this possible?

Re: MC Service Guard on a single server with 2 NIC cards

Hi Charles,

If you have already purchased ServiceGuard, then you can make use of it. If you haven't, then I suggest you buy APA as ServiceGuard on a single node cluster doesn't serve any other purpose than APA does and the advantage with APA is that you can double up the bandwidth.

ServiceGuard on a single node is called "Singlenode Cluster". You set it up just exactly like multi-node cluster except you will have entries for only one node. Make sure you disable "SERVICE_FAIL_FAST_ENABLED" in the package configuration file if you intend to create packages.

Charles,
This is not an uncommon request.
As stated, if Serviceguard is already loaded, then you can take advantage of the standby LAN failover feature easily.

Do not assign an IP to the intended NIC via /etc/rc.config.d/netconf, and insure it is attached to the same network as the IP'd NIC.

Then create a cluster configuration file (cmquerycl) and observe that the non-IP LAN is designated a potential standby LAN in the "#" comments below the servers' description section.

Finally, cmapplyconf the file and start the cluster.

Test by pulling one of the cables and observing messages sent to syslog.log.

Re: MC Service Guard on a single server with 2 NIC cards

Service Guard's standby lan configuration can improve your reliability.

If I had one node and the money to spend over, I'd get APA. Now that you have the SG license, you can configure a 1 node cluster and set up the second card as a standby lan.

THis will improve the availability of your system. Just follow the guide, ignoring the stuff it says to do on the second node.
