Mcafee Command Line Virus Scanner 5.3

Guru's,
Are any of yu using this product? I am being forced to, but I am rather hesitant to do so, until I get the "HP-UX God's" opinion on it. So any of you have any advice/concerns?

Re: Mcafee Command Line Virus Scanner 5.3

I used it in our environment even though we had no shared filesystems and it killed me to put it in. I don't remember if it was 5.3 but we had to keep it updated. I wrote some scripts to automate the downloading from the mcAfee site and do the definition and application updates.

Let me know if you are interested.

Glenn, Please share anything you have. I am a bit weary about running this. We have hundreds of shares throughout our systems, but I still can't bring myself to run this, without some more info. THanks Glenn.

Re: Mcafee Command Line Virus Scanner 5.3

Adam,

"weary"? or "wary"?

Either way, I'm not quite sure why. McAfee is a reputable company and puts out a good product. While the need for such a product in a unix environment may be debatable, I don't see where there is any harm in running it. It may point out some areas of concern which may or may not be legitimate, but it won't hurt you to take a look at them at least once.

Good luck,

Pete

Pete,
Yes, I did in fact mean "wary" not weary. Thank you for the correction. Do you ever just run something you have never used, before without gathering some information?

Sure. The first time I installed and ran Data Protector or Glance or whatever, all the information I had to go on was HP's reputation. I'm just saying that McAfee has a pretty good reputation, too. I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try.

Re: Mcafee Command Line Virus Scanner 5.3

True, I did as well, but installing an HP product on an HP system with an HP operating system is a bit different that installing a Mcafee product on an HP-UX machine.

Granted.

All I'm saying it this isn't JoeBlow's Discount Script Kiddy Open Source Emporium (like my developers like to frequent - and they can't understand why I refuse to load that crap on my machines). The likelihood of ill-effects is somewhere between slim and none.
