Re: Migrate 10.2 to 11

Hi:

There are lots of threads on this topic. Choose SEARCH to you left and search the forum for "10.20 and 11". You will be well rewarded.

In general, the concensus is that doing a cold install of 11.x is much cleaner and more problem-free than doing an actual upgrade from 10.20.

A good thread within the last day or so is the one below. It contains a general overview of the kinds of things you will want to do and to consider.

Hi Nalin-

Jim's point is a good one that there's all sorts of posts on this topic, and you can find them with the Search button. Furthmore, the specific thread that he references was a great one to highlight (thanks, Jim!). In case you couldn't find the search button (sorry that it's kind of hidden!) it's located on left nav bar & that will enable you to search any or all of the forums for relevant material.

I also wanted to point out to you some of the Migration material that's in the Planning section of the ITRC that also might be helpful for your 10.20 -> 11.0 migration. Check it out:

Hope that helps & thanks for posting to the Forums!

Happy weekend-
Jeff

Re: Migrate 10.2 to 11

My candid advise is do a cold installation of 11.0 and reinstall your applications so tat you can relink them to the HPUX

Re: Migrate 10.2 to 11

Thank you James Jeff and Chris. With a cold install is it possible to preserve my volume groups and the data or do I have to load from tapes ? (not the root disk but others which have our databases etc etc)

thanks again. I have piked up the threads as well. Also how long normally would a cold install take ? leaving out the time to backup which will be done anyway. This information is very important for us to decide o budgets etc for the upgrade process and to inform users of downtime.

Any ideas informaton again would be appreciated much.

Re: Migrate 10.2 to 11

Hi:

While I would certainly backup ALL your data for safety, you can plan to vgexport before the install and then vgimport the non-root volume groups after the install. This will save the restore time that you would incur if backing-up and restoring solely from tape. See the man pages for vgexport & vgimport.

For additional insurance, you might want to make a make_recovery tape of your current Operating System before you start.

After the installation of the new OS Core CD, you will want to apply the ACE (Additonal Core Enhancements) as well as a current Support Plus General Release bundle of patches. This is the time to make your system current.

As various items in the post I referenced originally point out, make a good record of your network parameters, /etc/passwd & /etc/group, and your printer configuration.

Some of this information can be found in the /var/opt/ignite/local/manifest/manifest.info --- another advantage to using Ignite's make_recovery to capture your old OS before you start.

Hopefully this helps your planning and time estimates.

Re: Migrate 10.2 to 11

James Thank you again. Given this I would say 1.5 days at the out set ?

I have alrady done the make_recovery tapes as part of the disaster recovery process.

Have a nice day.
