Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
running SAP and Oracle. I've been tasked to migrate the SAP/Oracle Application from the rx2600 to a HP 9000 PA-RISC server.
OS info:
sysname = HP-UX
release = B.11.23
machine = ia64
Oracle version 9.2
SAP Release 31I
I've see some whitepapers concerning mingration from PA-RISC to Itanium where you Install The Oracle Software and copy the DB from PARISC to ITANIUM.
Would the same process work in the opposite direction Itanium to PA RISC?

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
Passing a volume group with Oracle data works both directions between HP-UX 11.11/PA-RISC and HP-UX 11i v3/Itanium (Native Oracle 10.1 on both platforms).

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
If it is for PA-RISC, after moving the volume group from IA64 to PA-RISC, you can start your application.
In other case before starting SAP you have to install a new Oracle 9.2 PA-RISC version. Please install the same version and the same patch level already installed on IA64.
About SAP software the version 31I is an old and unsupported version, so I think you run on IA64 the PA-RISC version. In other case please install in /sapmnt/XXX the PA-RISC sap kernel version.

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
It would seem they would be more successful doing the reverse.

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
SO the Migration of SAP 4.6c and Oracle 9.2 will be from the rsx2600 running HP-UX 11.23 to an N4000 running PARISC HP-UX-11i.
I may have an option to setup a N4000 or L2000 PARIS as HP-UX 11.23 as the target server. So the migration could go from HP-UX 11.23 (RX2600) to HP-UX 11.23 (L2000 | N4000)
Any input concerning migrating SAP/Oracle from HP-UX 11.23 to HP-UX 11.11 (11i)?
I'm thinking setting up the target server as HP-UX 11.23 will allow me to copt the SAP & Oracle Binaries along with the Oracle DataBase files.

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
You really don't want to copy the binaries between the ia64 and pa-risc systems particularly if you have to change OS versions as well. The oracle datafiles can be migrated over via vgexport/import; however, you really should install new binaries for both oracle and SAP.
Without the OS version change, it would probably (possibly?) work; however, you'd be basically emulating the other architecture. It's better for performance, maintenance, and just plain cleanliness to use the binaries that are compiled for the OS you're running.

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
It won't work going from Integrity to PA.

Re: Migrate SAP/Oracle from Itanium to PA RISC
Support for HP-UX 11.11 (11i v1 if you prefer) ends within a year ar two.
Itanium performance per socket is 4 times that of PA-RISC machines.
I think that acquiring a new Itanium system, including 3 years support will be a lot cheaper than paying support for an old PA-RISC server.
If you want to go to PA-RISC, it's your choice. But you will be moving everything again soon since PA-RISC is a dead-end.
