Migrating a 725 to a C160?

We are still using an old 725 on HPUX 10.20 with about 100 gigs of data on it... We are planning to migrate it on a Linux platform within the next 4-6 months... with newer technologies, redundancy, etc..

But.. right now we are not even capable to do a whole backup of the system since the old machine is simply suffocating under the load it has to deal with...

We tought that.. for a short while we could simply migrate it on another 700 serie machine (like a C160 that we do have in our storage..) without too much problems....

So i tought i could simply do an exact copy of the root disk, make it bootable, and give it a try directly on the C160... And if it does work re-attach the external 100 gigs of data and 'voil??'

My question is.. would it work?.. if so.. how should I make the copy of the system?

Thnx.

if you have tape drives in both machines (or even one of them) the best way to do this with ignite backup. do a man make_recovery for all the options. You can then export the VG and import them into the new system

Vin,

Do you have ignite installed? Should be in /opt/ignite/bin, if not, I'd suggest installing it, creating a "make_recovery" tape, then using that tape to "build" your other server.

Re: Migrating a 725 to a C160?

There is no tape drive on the 725.. But I first tought of something way more radical... To shutdown the machine.. remove all the external storage except the vg00 (the actual system disk on id 6).. Add a new empty disk on the system.. Power up the machine in single user mode (hpux -is) than the an 'off-line' copy of the vg00 on the new disk.. make the new disk bootable and give it a try on the C160.. If the disk does work fine then I'd probably take the external drives from the 725 and plug them onto the C160...

Another way would simply be to plug all the hard drives on the C160 and simply change the boot path on the console and boot it up.. Would that way too simple solution work?

Re: Migrating a 725 to a C160?

I seriously doubt that a make_recovery, or even a copy of the system disk would work. I could almost guarantee that the boot disk from the 725 would not boot the C160. There will be kernel drivers that the C160 requires that the 725 won't have and probably a host of other things.

Your best bet would be to just migrate the data, and application if necessary, to the C160 and install whatever is necessary.

If you want, you could try your idea with the duplicate boot disk, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work.

Re: Migrating a 725 to a C160?

I think I'll still try copying the vg00 disk (ID 6) to a new disk and try to boot on the C160 with it.. never know might work.

What I'll do is removing all the disks and just keeping the ID6 drive.. plug in a new hard disk at ID5 and do a copy of the system disk in single user mode...

By the way.. I made a mistake.. it's not a 725... but a 755 machine..

Could somebody give me a few hints on how to copy the disk and make it bootable?

thnx.

Re: Migrating a 725 to a C160?

Salut Vincent,

This is for sure will not work !

I would prefer :

1. Installing new server.
2. Connecting the external disks

Solving installation problems will be pinuts in comparing with the copy vg00 on disk !
I would say that the copy solution will be a time wasting task .

Any way, have a good luck in both solutions .
