Re: migrating volume groups 1.0 to 2.1 version

You have 11.31, but is it 11.31 September 2008 or a later release?

LVM 2.1 was not in the original release of 11.31; it was introduced in September 2008.

Run "swlist" without any options and look at the "FEATURE11i" bundle. The bundle version number will be something like B.11.31.0909.341b: here 0909 means 2009-09, i.e. September 2009. The bundle description will be something like "Feature Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11i v3, September 2009".

If you have a valid support agreement, order a new media kit from HP. Then make an Ignite recovery media or a DRD clone, schedule some downtime, and use update-ux to update your OS to a later release.

(Note: update-ux has a less than satisfactory success rate when upgrading between major versions, but upgrades from e.g. 11.31.aaaa to 11.31.bbbb are less scary. Nevertheless, always take backups before making changes.)

Re: migrating volume groups 1.0 to 2.1 version

vgversion comes with the LVM 2.1 upgrade software. LVM 2.1 is only available with the Sept 2008 OE. You might have to upgrade to the 11.31 Sept 2008 OE or later to get LVMv2.

YOu cannot use LVMv2 for Boot volume groups till the March 2010 OE

Re: migrating volume groups 1.0 to 2.1 version

"vgversion" command is available form the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2009 Update release. You may need to update is to March 2009 release.

â ¢The volume group must be deactivated during migration.
â ¢The volume group must be cluster unaware (vgchange â c n) before changes are made. After the volume group migration, you can then make the volume group cluster aware (vgchange â c y).
â ¢No physical volume in the volume group is configured as a cluster lock disk for a high availability cluster.
â ¢If any physical volume has relocated bad blocks, you must replace that physical volume with a new disk. It must be disable before migration.
â ¢Bootable disk is not supported by VG 2.x.
â ¢Spare PV is not supported. You must change all spare physical volumes to regular PV.
â ¢After migrating to VG 2.x it will use /etc/lvmtab_p instead of /etc/lvmtab.

To review & report a error if there is anything.
#vgversion -V 2.0 -r Vg_Name

To migrate the VG
#vgversion -V 2.1 Vg_Name
