Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

Hi,
I am upgrading a number of D and L class systems from 11 to 11i. I have read through the upgrade guide from HP and I am confused as I am told that I have to un-mirror my disks to upgrade. In what guide and in another it does not mention this???

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

There is nothing in the 11i Installation and upgrade guide (on www.dos.hp.com) about mirroring. Nothing in the requirements section or perparation section, or problems section, so I dont think you need to unmirror.

Who told you that you have to unmirror your disks to upgrade ?
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Robert,

This is pure conjecture on my part, but it would seem to me that the guide that recommends breaking the mirror is attempting to provide a fall-back path in case there are problems with the upgrade. I can't imagine another reason.

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

Hi,

no need to unmirror the disk to upgrade.

i prefer cold install rather than upgrade for better performance
never give up

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

Hi,
In the March 2002 11i install & upgrade guide p58. It says that update-ux removes Mirror Disk ux bundles??? There is no reference in the same guide dated Sep 2002??

Ravi, can you justify that??

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

Just a personal opinion. First, I would unmirror so I had a fall back point.
Second, the upgrade may go a bit faster if the I/O's only have to happen on the primary disk instead of writing to the primary and the mirror. It may not be significant but, there will be half the writes happening.

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

To do the upgrade, you do not have to unmirror. My evidence, that's how I did it in upgrade class.

Though I'll warn you, the failure rate in an HP lab for that upgrade was around 35% in my class.

This was an environment where HP completely controlled the setup with Ignite.

Cold install has a 100% success rate witht he hardware you mention. What we are doing right now here is as follows:

We built an Ignite Server with HP-UX 11.11(11i) we installed all of our applications.

We then boot the other servers off this Ignite server and do a network based Ignite installation.

Here are some docs on Ingite.

The methodology I'm recommending works, I even have 11.00 images on the Ignite server for disaster recovery on the boxes we're decommissioning this year.

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

My experience is that, where MirrorDisk is installed, as part of the upgrade to 11i a new version of LVM is installed - without MirrorDisk. The disks will still be mirrored (I think) but you will not be able to change or maintain mirroring. You will need to get a new codeword to get MirrorDisk off of the 11i CD's & then re-install MirrorDisk asap.

Re: Mirror Disk 11 to 11i upgrade

Since you boxes are older, Im not sure I would recommmend upgrading on them, Although I prefer upgrading 11.0 to 11i on newer systems.

Regarding the mirroring... when I did an 11i upgrade, not cold installs, it does NOT disable mirrored filesystems.

After I did my upgrade all my previous mirrored filesystems were still mirrored. however, I had to reinstall MirrorDisk/UX before I could make NEW mirrored VGs/LVOLs.

I did this with 5 N-4000s and had no problems whatsoever, other than having to vxenablefs -a so my advanced mount options would work.

Also, I would sugggest doing the vxupgrade to move your JFS filesystems to version 4.
Unix, the other white meat.
