Missing Applications and Network Disconnect
Hi there --
I have a 10.20 workstation that somehow 'lost' its telnet, ssh, and nis binaries. I first noticed a problem when I was not able to use telnet. After rebooting the system, I noticed that NIS and SSH no longer work. When I do a whereis command on the aforementioned programs, the output does indicate their supposed locations, but when I go to the directories in question, the applications are not there. However, applications like NTP server and e-mail continue to work without difficulty.
I have a recovery tape available that was generated by Ignite before this problem occurred. I was going to use it to recover the system from its current situation. Before I do that, I wanted to know what, if any, other options are available. Thanks.

Re: Missing Applications and Network Disconnect
Shalom,
Two common ways to have this happen.
1) Disk problem. This is likely to get worse and you'll likely lose the whole system. Time ot make an Ignite backup of the system so you can restore it after failure.
2) Manual eraseure. The binaries can merely be restored from a working system.
To determine the seriousness and cause of the problem check the sh_history on the system and the output of dmesg and /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

Re: Missing Applications and Network Disconnect
Hi there --
I ran the dmesg command as well as checked the syslog.log file, and there did not seem to be anything out of the ordinary in each. I could not find the sh_history file, so if you could tell me where it should be, I'll check there.
When I was running the find command for sh_history, I noticed that a large amount of binaries in the /usr/bin directory were missing. If I was to do an Ignite restore, could I limit it to the /usr/bin directory?
