missing vg

I use an rp3440 attached to MSA30 Disk array of 8 Disks, mirrored 4-4. After a power failure on the MSA, the machine can boot normaly but can not mount the volumegroups vg01 and vg02 which reside on the Disk array. Physiscaly the disks are fine and i can see them with ioscan command. I have oracle database on them and i don't want to lose any of the data. How can I reattach these vg's?

Are these VGs not activated? If you run the 'vgdisplay -v' command do these VGs show in the output?

When I do vgdisplay -v they do not show for both vg's. The message is:
Vgdisplay: volume group not activated
Can not display volume group /dev/vg01

vgchange -a y vg02

Then

mount -a

Your server may have come up before the array did.

to activate a VG, use

vgchange -a y /dev/vgXX

If the VGs are not active, you will need to activate with the commands listed above.

Then you can mount them.

try

vgchange -a y -q n vg01

to activate the VG. Investigate the missing disk - could be broken.

Did the device names change for the disks on the reboot?

I would do a diskinfo on the /dev/rdsk/ of all the disks in vg01 and vg02 in strings /etc/lvmtab

Hi mit,

Lets start from the begining, to solve an issue like this one, the whole history has to be give n for a correct understanding and lay down of all the possible issues, once that is know can you start to solve....
So,
1 - you had a power failure on a disk subsystem
mirrored 4-4 (should I understand srtiped on 4 disks and mirrored after?)
How is vg00 configured (internal with mirroring?)
How was the sub-system connected? etc...

2 - What happend? (understand chronological events)

3 - what did you do next?


4 - what is in or OLDsyslog.log and what is is the syslog now (no sence if you rebooted a few times, your Old would have been replaced...), is there anything in /var/adm/crash?

OK, your missing device is a LUN presented by a smart array controller installed in slot 2 (second from top), right?

You need to run an "ioscan -fn" and locate the array controller device (e.g. /dev/ciss4).

Now run

sautil /dev/ciss4

and post the results. This will show the status of the array.

to add this: there is only a single path to the volumes (via the smart array controller).
This is also the reason why the quorum override cannot work.

Hi,

I have run the sautil on ciss4, then activated the vg's , run a fsck on the filesystems as they were corrup after trying to mount.

The array is now back online and i managed to start the oracle db wich and all is fine now.
