Mixed disk

Mixed disk

Dear all,

I ve got quite unusual problem on L2000. I made a mirroring of boot (system) - and data disks. Later on during the delievry of the server the disks were mixed (not by me :) in the way that boot main was in place of alternative (mirror) data disk and alternative data disk was in place of main boot disk. Due to autoboot enabled the system had sucessfully started and I didn;t pay attention to such kind of mixture (I thought that disks became faulty ). In such configuraton with alternative boot and main data we worked for 1 week. The "mixed" disks for surely are not synchronized.

What is the best way to synchronize disks.
In my opinion alternative data disk will be automatically synchronized. What should I do with main boot disk. Will it help to synchronize if I boot from alternative boot disk while the main boot disk is inserted ?

Thanks in advance,
Andrey

Re: Mixed disk

Andrey,

Is mirroring still running? Check with lvdisplay on your LV's.

What do you want to do? Do you want to move the ORIG_BOOT (which is potentially a mirror of DATA_DISK now) back to the MIRROR_of_ROOT?

Re: Mixed disk

If you are currently booted from the alternate book disk then all you have to do is reboot from the primary disk and it will automatically sync them both when it comes up.

I dont understand in your question where you said should you boot from the alternate while the main boot disk is inserted - I understand that this is already the situation (booted from alternate and primary boot disk is inserted) ??

If you lvdisplay each lvol in vg00 what does it say the LV status is ? available/syncd ?
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: Mixed disk

Stefan,

He had four disks:

PRIMARY.....MIRROR
ORIG_ROOT & MIRROR_of_ROOT
ORIG_DATA & MIRROR_of_DATA

Now it looks like this:

PRIMARY..........MIRROR (maybe)
MIRROR_of_ROOT & ORIG_DATA
MIRROR_of_DATA & ORIG_ROOT

Re: Mixed disk

Sorry guys for my bad explanation.

Now the server is working :
alternative boot disk and main data disk.

So main boot disk and alternative data disks are OK and lying on my table but with configuration and data which is 1 week not up-to-date.

I would like to insert disks lying on my table in the way that they will be synchronized with the working ones.

Again sorry for my explanation

Andrey.

Re: Mixed disk

I'm quite sure if I understand your problem but here are a few facts.
It is not the disks as such that is mirrored, but each logical volume.
There is no "one original and one copy", only two copies (or two original if you like).
In order to be able to boot off the disk the root lvols are mirroered to that disk need a boot/LIF area (the first part of the boot is off the LIF area not the filesystem).
If the disks where physically moved (in a HA cabinet) you should have had quorum problems when booting.
Does a 'lvdisplay (of each lvol) show 'LV Status' 'available/syncd'?
