mkfifo and i18n

Does mkfifo create FIFO stream which supports multibyte character code sets ? The man page for mkfifo says :

International Code Set Support
Single-byte character code sets are supported.

But when i created a FIFO for Chinese characters, I could get correct results.

Could any body help me out here, as in why does the man page say that Single-byte character code sets are supported ?
