Modem Configuration

Hi All,

I have ben tried to configure a Multitech MT5634ZBA modem connected to a serial mux card.

I have configured the modem on the system through SAM and have got the confirmation that three device files have been created.

root:logs] # lssf /dev/*a8

Now, when I try to use kermit the following error is experienced

The modem has been configured through sam and the present settings are as below
/dev/console Console 4/0/0/0/0 0 0
/dev/ttyd0p1 Modem 4/0/0/0/0 1 4800
/dev/ttyd1a8 Modem 4/0/4/0/0 a8 4800

I have a few questions for the above problem

1)In kermit, do I have to set up modem type ? If yes what type can I setup ?

2)Which device file is to be used for the connection through kermit as I have tried using all the available options.

3)We have added the below line on /etc/uucp/Devices
Direct cua1a8 - 19200 direct

4)Please let me know if the port speed and RTS/CTS paramters are to be selected or not ?
Also the CCITT selections have to be selected or not.

Cheers,
Himanshu

Re: Modem Configuration

try to isolate the problem by first logging directly into the modem to issue AT commands to dial out a test number
( take kermit out of the equation)

You can access the modem directly with cu
for more info: man cu

Re: Modem Configuration

If you still can't connect to the modem with cu, I think I remember from ancient times that the cable pinout between the mux card and the modem is non standard. Make sure you use a genuine HP cable.

Re: Modem Configuration

The cu does not connect to the modem and it hangs after I try to connect to modem.

Also seems the modem does not have any connection problem as the ligths on 56K are blinking.

Any other suggestions ?
Torsten.

Re: Modem Configuration

What kind of server do you have?

Hope this helps!

Re: Modem Configuration

I try to remember the entry in /etc/uucp/Devices

should be cul1a8, not cua1a8.

and try cu like:

# cu -m -l cul3a1 -s 19200 dir

AT should give OK.

I would change the permissions to 0666 for the device files.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Modem Configuration

Himanshu,

As said earlier, are you trying a normal serial cable. Bcus for HP the cable is bit non standard. I guess the the normal pins for Rx and Tx are reversed on the HP side.

So refer to the connection guide and you surely need to redo the serial cable if you havent gotthe cablfe from HP.

Re: Modem Configuration

I would try the new pinout for the modem.

I was also giving a thought to the PCI mux card which is HWP1510.

I suppose there are no compatibility issues with this.

Re: Modem Configuration

Is the Modem cable working ?. Can you check the cable.

Re: Modem Configuration

The lights on the Multitech will help identify the problem. First, the cable MUST be a straight-through modem cable. This is the same type of cable as a PC would use for a modem. Note that a null modem (aka, crossover or printer cable) is 100% incompatible.

With the correct cable, you should see the DTR light (data terminal/CPU ready). The modem should never be strapped to always answer the phone or to continuously supply DCD (carrier detect) signal as there is no way for the computer to properly handle incoming or outgoing calls.
