Move /home

Maybe, silly question but is it okay to move /home from VG00 to another disk?

Hi Lise,

No problem. However, if root's home directory is within /home, move it to a directory with the "/" filesystem. This way you will avoid problems in single user mode.

Lisa, I wouldn't move it if you can help it. But if you must there isn't a problem. I still think you can put the /home in your make_recovery tapes(the man pages should explain it). But you shouldn't have any problems putting it into vg01.

/home is unnecessary to boot and run HP-UX, even if root's home has been moved to /home/root or something similar. It's the least important from the system's point of view as only users need it. (techie note: if root's home is non-existant, the shell will default to /, or you can create an empty directory (after un-mounting /home) called /home/root which would only be needed in single user mode or if /home gets un-mounted)

If /home is growing (it always does if you allow users on the system), then moving it to a different volume group is highly recommended. It doesn't matter if Ignite/UX doesn't backup /home's volume group--that's what you have regular backups for. Ignite/UX is only to restore vg00 which gets HP-UX started.
