SolutionMy preference is always to cold-install. You can start fresh; resize your root logical volumes appropriately and begin with clean filesystems devoid of patches from prior releases, etc.
Once you order (license) the operating environment you choose, you should have the bulk of the "application" products available to you. License the remaining products you need (Ansii C, APA, whatever); order an Application DVD set; and obtain your installation codewords online for the products that are not pre-bundled with the operating system environment (OE):

Re: moving from 11.0 to 11i.v2
A) You can update to HP-UX 11i v2 from the following releases:
HP-UX 11i version 1.0 (B.11.11)
HP-UX 11i version 1.6 (B.11.22)
HP-UX 11i version 2.0 (B.11.23)
***Updating from any other release directly to HP-UX 11i v2 is not supported.
B) Update is supported on HP PA-RISC Servers and Itanium-based Servers and Workstations. Update is not supported on HP 9000 PA-RISC Workstations.
c) Before cold-installing or updating to HP-UX 11i v2, make sure you read HP-UX 11i v2 Installation and Update Guide.

Re: moving from 11.0 to 11i.v2
A few points i'd like to mention.
I would do a fresh install rather than risk 2 upgrades any day. 11.0 to 11.i was bad enough let alone going onto 11.23 aswell.
Also / and other files systems need to be considerably larger than 11.0 ever did, so you could also run into problems if roots not big enough. Alot more is installed by defualt with 11.i and 11.23 aswell software wise, so this needs to be accounted for.
I would also be inclined to change the disks for larger ones while i was doing the upgrade, to allow for future growth.
The products you need to order from Hp are licences for the server and media, lic depend upon what you already have, and how many cpu's. You may need more memory aswell depending upon the config.
One more thing to check is, is the server actually supported to run 11v2? chack for firmware update requirements aswell.
what server is it? it needs to be a 64bit capable server. If you only have a 32bit install thats another reason for a fresh install.
if your in doubt check the docs on installing 11.23 on www.docs.hp.com for minimum requirements.
before you start actually start do 2 full ignite backups, but if you do the install on new disks, should you have problems then you can always just put the old disks back in to get you running again.

Re: moving from 11.0 to 11i.v2
allow me also add my views.
Get 1 or 2 new disks.
Fresh install the new OS. Install all the latest patches. Verify your applications. If OK, continue. The Old disk may serve as backup.
If not OK, get back the old disk until you find a fix to the problem you are getting with the new OS.
hope this helps too!
kind regards

Re: moving from 11.0 to 11i.v2
My plan is:-
1)ignite/backup present OS
2)vgexports to map files for my non root volume groups
3)secure my password files and other configuration files
4)cold install of the 11.23 and patch, then check what hardware works (or doesn't)
5)mkdir,mknod and vgimport non root volume groups.
Please let us know how you go or pm me as I'd be interested.
