Moving HPUX 11.0 from 32 bit to 64 bit

What is involved in upgrading my 32bit HPUX 11 machine to and 64 bit HPUX? Does it involve reinstalling the OS or can I just enable 64 bit somehow? Any help in doing this would be greatly appreciated. Also...is there a way to tell if the processor inside the box is a 64 bit processor? The processors in my machine are supposed to be 64 bit and was just wanting to make sure they are if there is an easy way to tell. Thank You.

Re: Moving HPUX 11.0 from 32 bit to 64 bit

Hi Chris:

Yes, you can switch between 32-and-64 bit versions of HP-UX 11.0 although I would opt for a clean, cold-install. The URL below contains the details.

Certain servers (notably some K-Class) require a minimum PDC and firmware revision installed for your processor to support 64-bit mode. This too, is documented in the second chapter of "Installing HP-UX 11.0 and Updating HP-UX 10.x to 11.0" [URL below].

To determine the bit-compatibility of your system do:

# getconf HW_CPU_SUPP_BITS

Yea all of my firmware and everything supports 64-bit. I have already checked that, but was just wondering if there was an easy way to go to 64-bit without reinstalling or if reinstalling would be the best bet.

Hi,

I supposed that since the 32bits install, you have added some patches.

So when you will upgrade to 64 bits, you will need to force install (install older files) and then reapply patches.

The cold install is the best way.
