Moving root disks
I am working a system upgrade, for new system built I am using a test D380 server, for the root disks I am using 2x2Gb Hot Swap disks. Can I simply take out the current disks from the production server (another D380) and replace with the ones from the test server ?
I am aware that I will have to take care of the LVM configuration for the other VGs, but thats something I don't have doubts on.

Re: Moving root disks
If the servers are identical in specification, why not simply promote the Test System to being the Production System (change IP Address and Server Name, and point any disks to it) and then build the Test System as a copy of the old Server?
Alternatively you could use the Ignite System to 'clone' the Test systems OS onto Production.

Re: Moving root disks
You can certainly try a straight swap of the disks - it should work as long as the hardware is almost the same (same expansion slots, in same slots etc.) and memory/swap is the same size etc.
If it doesnt work then use an ignite make_recovery tape - this is a better solution as when ignite restores it takes into account the hardware and reconfigures HP-UX accordingly - which means its guaranteed to boot up ok.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: Moving root disks
Jo, to be successful you have to have exact the same hw configuration of the servers including same hw paths to external devices.
For example, if you'll install these disks to another system which has another CPU then kernel may not start, if you insert disks to another slots in another D380 then server will start booting and then crash because LVM table mismatch, if you'll have cards installed differently then they may require reconfiguring. Etc etc
