Multi port network card

Multi port network card

Hi

I have a system with 1 NIC with 2 ports. My doubt is will these ports will have different mac addresses? H/W path will be different for each ports or what? In SAM this card will list as one line or two? I mean one line in SAM->Networking->NIC represent one port or one card?

Thanks in advance

Re: Multi port network card

Each port on the card should be listed as a different "card" in SAM and should have a different MAC address.

If you do a 'lanscan' you should see the 2 ports of the card listed as different lines of output.

Hi,

Your system will behave like it was configured with two network cards.

Re: Multi port network card

You can configure the card to team the two ports with the same IP address if you purchae the add in product called APA.

Then you'll have one IP address and double the band width in and out of the machine.

Your other choice is to have the machine act like it has two different NICs.

I personally wonder if the two IP addresses can be on the same subnet. Probably not.

Re: Multi port network card

This card should have two different MAC address along with two different hardware path (though similar but different). So therefore you will have two different lan device file for each port. You will be able to configure both ports with different IP addresses. Though I haven't work with SAM much, I think they will probably be listed as two different ports.

Re: Multi port network card

What would be the reason that the two IPs could not sit on the same subnet?

Re: Multi port network card

each interface will have a different mac and a different device file. You can configure them completely independently. lanscan will show the mac. ioscan -fnkC lan will show the hardware address and device files.

Re: Multi port network card

Strictly speaking, each port will have a separate PPA but not a separate device file - with HP-UX 11 and later, all lan devices are accessed by opening /dev/dlpi and issuing a DLPI attach command for the desired PPA.
