Must run make_tape_recovery in Single User Mode?

I try to do a full system backup for the HP-UX 11.00. I am using the command: make_tape_recovery -A -I /dev/rmt/0mn

I wonder that is the make_tape_recovery must be run at Single User Mode then only it able to do a full system backup? Can I run it at multiuser mode?

After that how I can test the tape to make sure it able to restore back the system?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Must run make_tape_recovery in Single User Mode?

Hi,

Yes and No :-)

Yes you can use make_tape_recovery in multi user mode, but ignite is not designed to use as a full backup software ( dissaster recovery ).

I use Ignite to create a bootable backup for VG00 including the index + software off my backup software. In case of a dissaster I can restore the VG00 very fast. My backup software will do the rest of the restore.

Hope this helps,

You can make a recovery tape in single user mode but also you can make system backup in multiuser mode.
I have always take recovery tape in multiuser mode withow any trouble.

Re: Must run make_tape_recovery in Single User Mode?

Ignite will inform You on files that changed or dissapeared during the backup, when running in multiuser mode, this usually only affects log files or mail queues.
Usually ignite only saves vg00, You could extend that to other vg's, but it is not very useful, You should keep OS data contained to vg00 and save that using ignite and additionally everything by means of a real backup utility.

But still, You don't have to go to singleuser mode - usually You'd set Your rc scripts so that every application is already stopped at runlevel 2.

You can run the command in both single- and multiuser mode, but single-user moode. You only have to provide the situation that files in vg00 will not be deleted in the process of make_recovery.

Re: Must run make_tape_recovery in Single User Mode?

There is a special note about running make_tape_recovery in single user mode.

See the Ignite FAQ at

Re: Must run make_tape_recovery in Single User Mode?

Hi Tay
I have been running a weekly ignite for vg00 alone. I have always been running the make recovery in the multi-user mode. So the answers to your questions are No, you DONT have to be in single user mode and yes you can run Make Recovery in Multi user mode.
To answer the second part of your question, usually make recovery is done for vg00 alone and so in case of disaster recovery, make recovery can be used to get back your booting disk. You should have your backup software doing a regular backup and use those backup media to get the whole system back.
